Hey I still haven’t seen the newest episode but I have Thoughts based on something that caught my eye. So I was thinking about Quentin’s confrontation with the Monster and there’s this brief second where he swipes his thumb across Quentin’s chin, which is almost an exact mirror to Eliot wiping caulk off of Memory!Quentin in 4x05. Do you think it’s a muscle memory thing? Like, little actions/behaviors Eliot’s body just does? Depressing alternative: can the Monster see inside the Happy Place?

and it hurts so good and i am INTO it. And uhhhhh brb sobbing forever thinking about Eliot’s hands remembering Quentin’s body even when said body is being inhabited by a monster.

You raise some good questions about the Monster’s ability to tap into Eliot’s memories though. At the very least the souls of the other creatures the Monster is carrying around can’t get into his happy place, but once he starts venturing outside of his safe space and deeper into his memories it seems to be fair game for all. I mean the Monster is def accessing some of Eliot’s more base desires and his draw to Quentin certainly seems to be rooted in Eliot’s own draw to him, so it’s very possible he’s able to see and sense it all–happy place included–he just doesn’t understand or care very much about most of it.

Hi Holly! So after reeling from the latest episode I had a thought. Quentin uses a very specific phrase to describe the way he repairs things -"Like I helped it wake up and remember what it was before". And I'm not implying that small objects = people, but, especially by next episode, Quentin will have not one but two people who could use some help waking up and remembering what they were before. I'm always so down for using the Power of Love to fight possession. Intentional foreshadowing?

Just now seeing this because my inbox is a disaster area but omg Y E S. This is actually somewhat what I was touching on in my most recent post. And it might just end up being some seemingly minor thing that Q ends up mending that makes the difference in the end or… it could be something much bigger. Because they made it a point to have past Alice mention just how much pain she can see future Q is in, and on this show magic comes from pain, and how powerful would it be for Q to pull some reverse battle magic energy burst and be the one to save or heal one of the people that he loves when it seems all hope is lost????? I know this show is not about triumph or magic being the cure to anything major, and whatever happens is certain to only make things 10x worse when all is said and done… but Q has been so broken and hopeless all season, and if anyone deserves to have a moment like this, it’s definitely him.

Okay so first of all this is at least half @zeezoutenijs‘ fault and timezones hit us before we could hash out all the details, so blame the cool stuff on them and the rough gaps on me, but:

(eight million spoilers for TAZ Balance under the cut)

Captain Nathan Ford and his wife, Dr. Maggie Collins, head up the team crewing the Starblaster.  Nate’s worked for the IPRE for years, command track, trained to lead and think on his feet in weird situations and see big-picture concepts and make judgment calls in a split second.  Maggie is an archivist, an artist, an art historian.  When this expedition comes up, they’re the perfect pair to send.

The IPRE in this AU is a little bit more mercenary, a little bit less scientific--they want to uncover the secrets of the multiverse, but they also want to know about what people are out there, make contact.  Make friends?  Make enemies?  Who knows?  But their crew reflects that.

Tara Cole is their crew negotiator.  She’s trained in diplomacy (in espionage), in negotiation (in coercion), in finding things out and getting things from people.  She might, in fact, originally be a bard.  She’s real good at her job.

Sophie Devereaux is their cleric, their healer.  Where Tara’s job is to deal with the people they may meet on this journey, Sophie’s job is to take care of the crew themselves--keep them in one piece, physically and mentally and spiritually.

Eliot Spencer’s a fighter, of course, head of security.  Alec Hardison’s the one and only wizard they have on the crew--he’s their engineer, there to keep the ship running.  The IPRE will send more wizards to investigate arcane and abstruse magics of the universe once the Starblaster figures out what the universe is, but for now, Hardison’s just there to keep them in the air.

Parker is their “supply officer”.  Everybody knows Parker’s a thief, everybody knows putting Parker on this mission (putting Tara on this mission, putting Eliot on this mission) means this mission has more to do with finding resources in other dimensions and appropriating them than scientific discovery, but Parker’s a damn good rogue and she’s trained to do this and better than this for years, so what the hell.

Most of them don’t leave too many people behind, aside from Nate and Maggie and their son.  He’s eleven.  He’s staying with a cleric friend of theirs, just for the length of the mission--except, of course, that ‘the mission’ turns very quickly into something they DID NOT EXPECT.

Fast-forward a century, with a few small snapshots along the way:

Nate is drinking and Nate is drinking and Maggie has not given up, will not give up hope.  Maggie is still awed and humbled by every new plane they see, still writes down faithful records of the art, the architecture, the culture, the wonder of every people they run into.  Maggie still thinks that if they can find a way to defeat the Hunger, they can get back every single plane it swallowed, including their own.  Nate never tells her otherwise, not out loud.  (Nate has given every single plane they’ve ever lost to the Hunger up for dead, every one and especially theirs, and he has been in mourning for a hundred years.)

Sophie and Tara have fought and argued and tumbled into bed and competed for lovers they know might die in a year for a hundred years.  Tara never mentions the part where Sophie’s more than a little in love with Nate.  Things are complicated enough, with Nate and Maggie finally finding not-too-shaky ground as friends who were once married, without someone else getting into the picture.

(Of course, it’s been a hundred years--they’ve both slept with Eliot, and Parker’s slept with Maggie, and Parker and Eliot and Hardison have all been with each other in various combinations, and there was that most-of-the-team orgy on that one planet that one time, and Sophie and Nate did hook up exactly once but only Tara knows, and then only because she knows them both so, so damn well...)

Hardison takes care of the Voidfish, builds its tank, visits it every day, tries to make the ship as much as possible like home.  Hardison’s always trying to make the ship like home, for all of them.  Parker visits the Voidfish sometimes, though, lets it sing to her.  Doesn’t understand but stands there anyway, staring at it as it glimmers with the vastness of space.

But they’re tired, is the thing.  They’re tired.

Sophie spent thirty years trying to parlay with the Hunger, and it didn’t work.  She tried every trick she knows, and it’s still coming.  They’re tired.  They’re so tired.

This world seems like...a second chance.  A final chance.  If this plan works, they stop the Hunger from ever taking another plane.  If this plan works, they starve the Hunger out.

(If this plan works, do they give up every plane it ever took before for lost?)

(If this plan works, even if those other planes do survive, will they ever see home ever again?)

Sophie’s the one who can’t take it, when the Artifacts throw the world into chaos.  None of them can take it, not one bit, not Parker who’s been getting harder and harder to find around the ship, not Hardison who’s been burying himself in his lab or Eliot who’s been going down to the world’s surface to get himself into bar fights whenever he can, not Tara who’s been throwing her hair over her shoulder and pretending with everything she’s got not to care.  Not Maggie, who started folding in on herself even before the wars broke out.  Not Nate.

But Nate hasn’t been sober in years, and Sophie’s the one who snaps, who leaves.  She goes off to find herself, or find...something, she doesn’t even say what, just leaves an inscrutable note and disappears, and with Sophie gone...

With Sophie gone, one last thing between them that hadn’t quite broken yet finally snaps.  With Sophie gone, everyone breaks.

It’s three months before Nate can’t take it any more and starts looking for solutions, any solution, anything at all.  It’s another two months after that when Nate is scrubbing out the Voidfish’s chamber and splashes himself with accidental fishmuck, and half a dozen meaningless memories and the start of a brand new plan become clear.

He can’t fix the world, or the universe, or save his son, or save any of the worlds they’ve seen, anything at all.  But he might be able to save this one.  And he might just be able to save what’s left of his crew.

A fighter, a wizard, and a rogue walk into a bar, which is the start of a crappy joke or a poorly-balanced D&D campaign with no healers whatsoever.  Good thing there’s a bard there playing in the corner willing to give them a job.  Shame about Tara getting herself killed halfway through the first adventure, really.  She seemed like a good NPC.

Lucky thing Parker found that Amulet of Healing down in those mines.  There’s something odd about that necklace, diamonds and all--but it’s choc full of some very high-level healing spells, when it chooses to work, and it’s warm and fits nicely around Parker’s wrist when she wraps it twice around, and, well, they need healing kind of a lot.  Eliot keeps trying to teach their glass cannon wizard about hand-to-hand combat.  It’s not going particularly well.

They meet an absent-minded librarian in Neverwinter on their second mission.  A month later, she’s been recruited to the Bureau of Balance as an artifact specialist, an artificer and a researcher.  Maggie seems nice enough.  The Director never looks her in the eye.  Eliot notices that, vaguely, in passing, but Hardison’s too busy being distracted by rifling through her books and Parker doesn’t look people in the eye, ever, at all.  None of them can ever remember being particularly good with other people.  It’s a miracle they can even work with each other.  They all prefer to work alone.

The Director spends a lot of time shut up in his office.  He spends a lot of time drunk.

Parker, Hardison, and Eliot don’t know why, but they trust him anyway.

I saw your post re: tomarcus & JCS live and had to share something a friend and I discussed. We figured out that one way to interpret Judas and Judas's relationship re: Jesus is that Judas is too attached to Jesus-the-man as opposed to Jesus-the-Christ, and betrays him out of that love for him as a man: "...he's just a man / He's not a king - he's just the same / As anyone I know..." Lining up alarmingly well with Marcus' choice of Tomas-the-man over Tomas-the-exorcist at the end of s2

(2/2) actually I have more to add, sorry. In that parallel, both Marcus and Judas interfere with the holy cause (to one extent or another) and commit cardinal sins in order to prevent the suffering of the men they love (and are successful to one extent or another). So, uh, yeah, that’s super fucking cheerful, right?

Ummmm okay you’re trying to kill me I guess cool cool. But you know what this is… this is so good. Because Tomas is a Christ figure in his own right, and you are spot on that both Judas and Marcus are attached the HUMANITY of the men that they love. Like the reason Marcus kills Andy is very much because he can’t accept Tomas as anything other than a MAN that he LOVES and is attached to in a divine way but also a very earthly way. He can’t see past his love and attachment to the man to accept whatever plan God may have for Tomas. Which is why priests aren’t supposed to take spouses to begin with because it turns their focus from God to earthly love and uhhhhh yeah Marcus and Tomas are #married in a very similar manner to Judas and Jesus.

Anyway Tomas being Christ in his equation definitely bodes well for his future and I am not at all worried about his suffering or how this series is going to end for him nopeeeee not at ALL.
