The black substance now has a name:

Mordant!

It most commonly appears as a thick, blacker-than-black liquid that almost seems alive, though it can take many forms to infect its chosen target. (More on that another time. 👀)

When a guardian suffers catastrophic damage, the body they present themselves in can no longer protect them, forcing them into a dangerous fight-or-flight state. Each guardian experiences this differently, and recovery can take anywhere from hours to weeks while they hibernate and heal.

For Henry, this was about survival

During The Flying Kipper incident, his engine was literally crushing him, and yes while the guardians have immense strength.. sometimes that is not enough for him to protect themselves.

Hence The Mordant around his neck!isn’t there by accident—it’s there by Henry’s own choice. After the accident, he allowed it to permanently settle around his neck as a protective shield over one of the most severely damaged parts of his body. His neck has a strong touch, almost like armor.

His full story will come another day. 😭

Also! Henry wears two pairs of gloves because he has nosophobia (a fear of illness), so yes, those white gloves are layered over those leather gloves like my poor babyyyy😭

But why such long gloves? Are his forearms and legs the same way as his neck? We don’t know, do you?

So yes while Henry got a bigger and better improved engine, and a healed, stronger body, baby boy is still vulnerable to getting sickly

Also in my au Victor came down to Sodor around 1920 to be a mechanic to the guardians engines, but also a medic to the guardians themselves.
