My Documentary Final Exam 2/21/2017
My review will be of That Sugar Film, Daemon Gameau (2015). By the way, there will be spoilers ahead, so watch out for those bad boys! The modes of documentaries used by this film are performative mode, which is shown by the fact that the filmmaker is the subject of the film. Another he used slightly was expository mode because he narrated between each scene to give the audience a hint as to what he would be doing next. The final mode he expresses is poetic mode, as he is doing this as a slight artistic expression. What I mean by this is that he is doing this to make a point. His point is that we should be more conscious as to what we’re eating, and that we should cut back on our sugar intake. All three modes are very effective, as he uses the imagery of himself eating all this supposedly healthy food as a part of the film as a way to tell us, “No. Do not do this.” He uses these modes to prove that it is a bad idea to consume an absurd amount of sugar, even if it is through “healthy” foods. His narration throughout the film helps the audience understand what he is doing and why he is doing it; to make a point. I wrote down in my handy dandy notebook 49 impactful- and some hilarious -imagery, but I am going to cut it down to just a few. The first, and I think one of the most impactful, scenes I wrote down was that there were “lots of hecking sugar products”. What this means is that at the beginning of the film, Gameau showed lots of candy, and bags of sugar, along with obviously sugary foods, implying that there are many things out there that are really sugary and worse for us than we think. This is extremely impactful because, as I said, there is more sugar out there than we ever care to think about. The second most impactful was the fact that “20% of items would remain in the supermarket after removing all sugar products”. I was mindblown at that fact; I would have never guessed that there were that many products with sugar in them! This means that 80% of the grocery store has sugary products in it, and that is a lot! Third, there was a montage of Daemon getting checkups by his trusted doctors, such as a heart doctor; a weight doctor; a blood doctor; and a psychiatrist, I believe. It’s been a few days since I have seen this scene, but it still left an impact on me, even after this time. Why did it impact me? I would say it was because it means all those people care for his health, and they want to make sure he’s okay during his challenge. Fourth, I wrote down a quote from his pregnant girlfriend: “I hope you’re okay.” This made my heart hurt; his girlfriend seems to be one of the most worried people over him, and it’s really sad to see her in such a state. That one phrase is very sad to me, and it makes me so happy that he lived through such an ordeal, even with a few semi-permanent damages. Fifth(I apologise; I am running out of transitions), Gameau does a kind-of gross demonstration that shows how he could either have [insert food here] or have [alternate food with the amount of sugar in tablespoons that his desired food had]. It made me kind-of sad, and I felt bad for the man because he had to go through that. However, I was rooting for him; I knew he could do it, and he did! I did not see the whole movie, but what I saw still has me rooting for him to be okay, and I really hope he is. Two quotes that were really impactful to me were that he had, “signs of fatty liver”, and when he said “I find it very hard to feel full.” Those two were really, really impactful to me because they both show his health declining. Both my parents are nurses, and when they hear stuff like that, they know immediately that something is very wrong with their patient. Now, to finally answer the question you all have been waiting for: How does seeing images help us understand ourselves and one another?(I wrote that while looking away, so I am proud of myself) My answer to that question will use the things that I have written above as proof. Seeing the images of the sugary foods; unhealthy eating; Daemon Gameau’s unhealthy body; and the signs of his health declining by the day all makes us realise that maybe we should not eat what we think is healthy that actually has sugar in it, as these images are very impactful, and they really have a voice when it comes to trying to tell us to stop, and to not try this at home. As a reviewer, it is time for me to come to a conclusion. This has to be one of my favourite documentaries, as it is very educational, impactful, and it makes me think: wow, I need to be more consumer-conscious! Overall, I would give this movie a solid 8.5/10. Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a nice day!
I wish ukulele I could play
its music has so much to say,
Oh my how I wish I could draw
the beautiful scenery I once saw,
If only I hadn't read that awful book
on the world it gave me an unrealistic look
I wish people didn't look at me that way
their glares are screaming go away,
Oh how I wish I could change
the way I am is considered strange,
If only I wasn't so lost all the time
but not knowing where you're going is a crime
I wish society didn't judge us every day
in the end we're all skeletons anyway,
I wish for happiness we didn't have to pay
but greedy people are ruthless aren't they?
If only I was more grateful for this life of mine
instead I can't help but complain and wish for a better time.
My friends and I made a video for this thing. It's hilarious, you should watch it.
Hey people, I'm doing a thing for school and I need some thoughts on this question. Help me out?? :D
Imagine that it is 2100. Scientists have discovered how to slow down the aging of cells in humans. People can now live up to 200 years. Is this a good idea?
