Digitalizing MoCHiV Data

This project documents the digital transformation of the Swiss Mother and Child HIV Cohort Study (MoCHiV) through the migration of its extensive clinical data from an Oracle SQL database to REDCap. With over 100,000 records spanning decades, the migration aimed to modernize data collection, improve usability at study sites, and enhance interoperability with national health data systems. The process involved careful data cleaning, restructuring, and implementation of customized solutions using REDCap, R, and SQL. This case study highlights key challenges, technical strategies, and the impact of transitioning to a user-friendly, secure, and scalable electronic data management system for longitudinal public health research.

Versioned Schemas in Object Databases

This content explores the growing need for advanced schema versioning mechanisms in object-oriented database management systems (OODBMSs), especially for applications like CAD, CASE tools, and web platforms. Traditional schema evolution methods in OODBMSs are limited by the “single schema” approach, which fails to support backward compatibility and logical data independence. To address these limitations, the RiBS (Rich Base Schema) model was introduced and later extended to handle complex object hierarchies. This extended model supports dynamic schema restructuring, version merging, and consistent query processing across versions—key features for modern, evolving data applications. The article also compares related work and highlights the unique contributions of the extended RiBS model in advancing schema versioning.

• Families include 419 mothers, 201 fathers, 415 adopted and 347 biological fully-adult offspring (M age = 31.8 years; SD = 2.7)

• Proportion of variance in IQ attributable to environmentally mediated effects of parental IQs was estimated at .01 [95% CI 0.00, 0.02]

• Heritability was estimated to be 0.42 [95% CI 0.21, 0.64]

• Parent-offspring correlations for educational attainment polygenic scores show no evidence of adoption placement effect
