Cosima has this problem with pet stores. Sarah constantly tries to pass one, but every time they see one Cosima insists on entering, demands they go in, look at the kennels where every dog is pouting, eying potential owners. She brings up the genetic defects and the ways each animal winds up with what traits, rambles about Punnet Squares. Sarah half listens, distracted, mildly aloof and constantly alert. And then Cosima always asks if they can take five of them out— not one, five, and the owner is skeptical each time, but Cosima insists they have five children and she needs a dog for each one or you know, kids, man, they get so territorial. Sarah doesn’t correct her, but she snorts in disbelief every time. She’s the only one with a child, and she wonders if Cosima would even survive under the weight of five.
It’s worth it to watch the way her eyes light up and her mouth breaks, broad, the sun coming out from behind silver-white clouds. She smiles like Sarah never has. It’s the smile of a well-adjusted, friendly, trusting optimist. Sarah envies it.
"Ah man, you little dude, you’re great!" The scientist shouts, gathers a fluffy Pomeranian into her grip. The little animal squeaks and digs his paws all over her, squirms to escape, a pug jumping up to plant a sloppy lick all over Cosima’s glasses. She’s sitting cross-legged on the floor, Cosima Niehaus, and her eyes flick up to Sarah at the bench of the play pen. She opens her arms, the five puppies taking this time to start climbing up her thighs, and her laugh is rich, a full sound. "C’mon, join the cuddle, man! It’s great in here."
"I’m allergic." Sarah remarks, brushes a handful of dark hair from her eyes.
"No, you aren’t. Or I probably would be, too. Get in here, hug a puppy."
"I’m fine watching, thanks." Sarah says breezily, curls her hands at her sides, knuckles pressed against her seat, shoulders squared. Her posture is always very inward.
"Dunno what you’re missing." Cosima replies, and proceeds to reenact The Lion King with a Yorkshire Terrier.
