South Korean sci-fi series "Goodbye Earth" (2024):
I watched 2-3 episodes. To be honest, I didn't like the series. I don't know if I'll watch it anymore. Since I believe that everyone should make up their own minds, I offer here a short description available online. Maybe some of you will like it. My personal opinion: the series is a disaster movie without the disaster itself. This is the opinion of the authors, including the Japanese writer, about what will happen in society when it learns that humanity is facing destruction on a specific date. This situation also occurs. But I got bored.
Director: Kim Jin-min
An established director in South Korea, Kim Jin-min is known for his work on films like "The Tower" (2012) and "War of the Worlds: Invasion" (2014). His experience with disaster and suspenseful narratives translates well to the apocalyptic setting of "Goodbye Earth." Screenwriter: Jung Sung-joo
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Japanese author Kotaro Isaka, Jung Sung-joo handled the screenplay for the series. His work likely focused on translating the source material's themes and characters for a Korean audience while potentially adding his own creative touches. Actors:
Ahn Eun-jin (Han Yoo-rim): Ahn Eun-jin portrays Han Yoo-rim, a flight attendant likely caught in the chaos of the impending asteroid strike. Her performance is a key part of the emotional core of the series. Yoo Ah-in (Oh Jun-su) (Limited Appearance): This popular actor portrays Oh Jun-su, whose role details are scarce due to production edits made after drug use charges against him surfaced. Jeon Sung-woo (Seo In-chang): Jeon Sung-woo takes on the role of Seo In-chang, a character whose specific function within the narrative remains to be seen. Kim Yoon-hye (Kang Seung-mo): Kim Yoon-hye portrays Kang Seung-mo, another character whose role in the story is yet to be fully revealed. Inspiration and Themes:
The idea for "Goodbye Earth" originated from the novel of the same name by Kotaro Isaka. The novel explores themes of societal collapse, the fragility of human connection, and the choices people make when faced with an extinction-level event.
The series likely retains these core themes while potentially adding its own commentary on Korean society or human nature in general.
Critical Reception:
"Goodbye Earth" received mixed reviews. While some praised the special effects and the emotional weight of the narrative, others found the plot predictable and the characters underdeveloped. It seems the series benefits from strong performances but might not deliver a groundbreaking story within the disaster genre.
Overall:
"Goodbye Earth" is a South Korean science fiction series offering a glimpse into humanity's potential struggles facing an apocalyptic event. While the source material provided a strong foundation, the series' reception has been divided. If you're interested in Korean sci-fi and disaster narratives, "Goodbye Earth" might be worth checking out, but keep in mind the mixed critical response.
