Why I really don’t like my Sckoon
In the interest of full disclosure, the Sckoon company was very nice and sent me a free cup (size 1) to try and review. They were the only company that offered to do this for me and I am very grateful to them. Also in full disclosure: this was almost a full year ago. It’s not that I didn’t try it right away (I did), but I wound up sitting on it for about a year because I didn’t quite know how to write a *bad* review for a menstrual cup that Sckoon was expecting/hoping I’d love.
After using my Sckoon for about five full period cycles now, however, I feel very strongly that I need to share my opinion on this, if only to dredge up those Sckoon supporters who will hopefully refute my review and start some dialogue on different preferences for menstrual cups. However, after months of deliberation over this I feel very strongly that I do not like the Sckoon and do not recommend it, and here’s why:
(1) It leaks. Oh boy, does it leak. Of the roughly five cycles I’ve used it, my Sckoon has leaked about 3/5 days of each cycle. It’s been difficult for me to get it not to leak, to be honest, and it even leaked during lighter days of my cycle when I frustratingly acknowledged that I might as well not have been using a cup at all for all the good it did me. This issue was further supported by a close friend of mine who had been using a Sckoon for about a year and admitted that it leaked fairly regularly on her too (to my horror, she thought this was normal since Sckoon was her first menstrual cup experience). So you can blame this on my body, my vagina or my flow (don’t blame it on my technique though, because I’m pretty confident I’ve got that down..), but the fact that it also happened to my friend makes me suspicious about the design...
(2) It’s difficult to clean. Or maybe I should say *more* difficult than other brands I’ve tried. I’ve found that compared to both the Lunette and the Diva Cup, the air/suction release holes along the top of the Sckoon are more prone to getting clogged with gunk and are more difficult to clean out. I assume this is because they are smaller. The frustrating part about this is that I am not always in a position to be able to run my cup under water when I change it (ie I am in a public restroom stall), so having to reinsert a menstrual cup that still has brown clotted blood stuck in it is not an ideal way to make me feel clean and fresh.
(3) The stem sucks. Like really, really sucks. The leakage and cleaning issues bother me, but the stem issue really irks me. If you aren’t familiar with the Sckoon, it has a ribbed “tail”-like stem that is very soft and flexible, presumably to minimize discomfort if it hangs too low. That’s fine, except for the fact that it is non-functional when it comes to removing the cup. When I could actually get a grip on it, pulling on the stem to try to wrestle free my cup felt like pulling on one of those gummy toys I used to get in goodie-bags when I was 8 years old. It just stretches and stretches, but doesn’t do much to dislodge the cup. Almost every time I’ve had to resort to digging the cup out by the base, which is also not easy to grip despite the ripped texture on the bottom. Not only is this process somewhat painful and messy, but it means that it’s so much more of an *ordeal* to remove than most other cups I’ve tried.
If it wasn’t for the stem and the cleaning issue, I could maybe forgive the leakage as being an incompatibility issue between the softness of the cup and my needs, but it’s more than that. I’m curious as to whether anyone else has had a similar experience. I know Sckoon is a popular brand, so I have a feeling there are also a lot of happy users out there and I’m also interested to know what y’all think about the complaints I’ve raised.
Either way it feels good to finally get this off my chest. XOXO

I bought a menstrual cup online and I got it in but couldn’t get it back out! I tried everything so I ended up just texting my mom. I thought she was going to make me feel stupid (which, she did, she kind of teased me at first) but she ended up telling me a story about how my grandma had to help her get a tampon out once, lol.
Well once my vagina muscles started to push while I pulled on the little stem (it kept stretching was the problem), it eventually came out. I’m back to wearing pads for now. I have nothing bad to say about menstrual cups in general but I’m a little worried to use one again for a while for obvious reasons.
Hi there! I saw your post about the sckoon, I'm using one and it's great!! So far no complaints. I can't compare it to other cups, it's the only one I own, but I'm happy to talk about it!
So we have two votes for the Sckoon. Sckool.
