Claire and the Dragons #1
Claire and the Dragons #1 Scout Comics/Scoot! 2021 By Wander Antunes Translation by Marjory Abuleac Scoot Imprint: The villagers talk about the crazy old hermit, Lontar, who lives in the caves. They say he stands guard against dragons that will never come, creatures that exist only in his mind. Young Claire is the only one who believes him and has befriended the old outcast. She doesn't realize that he has been training her to fight, and telling her the ancient stories for a very special reason. Lontar wants Claire to take his place and save the ungrateful people who mock them both. Soon their laughter will be replaced with cries for help, and one brave girl, armed with only her fighting staff, will be the villagers' last hope. Enjoy the first issue of this NON-STOP! title followed by the entire story collected soon after in one volume. I don’t know how long till the trade comes out but I have to say it’s a bit of a tease to get the first issue and have to wait. Then again this is precisely what its intended to do, get the reader interested, invested and engaged so they want, nay need to read the rest of the story. So bravo on a job well done. I am in love with the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development is exceptional thanks to the dialogue, character interactions and the way they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter. I have to add that seeing how are visually adds a ton of characterisation as well which goes hand-in-hand with the writing. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way as well as introduce us to this world and these characters is beautifully done. I’m impressed with how we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge, grow and evolve over a short period of time. The layers contain the intense characterisation as well as the subtlety within the story and these add so much depth and complexity to what we see. How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is superbly achieved. The interiors here are absolutely charming. The linework is fantastic and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to bring about the detail work is astonishingly well rendered. That we see backgrounds as prolifically as we do makes me a happy camper and they enhance the moments as well as work within the composition of the panels to show the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. We see some nice creativity and imagination here and I cannot wait to see how the dragons are going to be rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling. There are pages that pop and stand out thanks to how they are utilised and it’s so nice to see. The colour work is gorgeous. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is incredibly well rendered. I know this is the young adult line from Scout but honestly this is for anyone of any age or gender. It has depths to how its told so that people of different ages and reading levels will see different aspects of the story come to life before their eyes. It is a stunning display of storytelling and I doth my cap because this really is being brilliantly told.
