The younger brother dying would explain why Ward is so incredibly messed up and so willing to kill his brother (and it could be the reason he was sent to military school, like his parents blamed him for it). I hope you’re right and he’s still alive.

Honestly it could go both ways for his younger brother. Either he did die (if he did I might throw myself out of a window), or he just wasn't worth mentioning, considering Garrett was only talking about the things that were a current threat to Ward. 

I really hope his little brother didn't die. But it's definitely possible considering we never saw how the end of that one flashback played out.
