December 2025: The First Weekend

The last batch of oven-dried pumpkin seeds for the birds:

Hazy Saturday walk at the park. I don't know if I've mentioned it before but our little neighborhood park is a certified arboretum that includes two persimmon trees. They're still producing ripe fruit for the walker who knows what they're looking for:

Sunday's walk included an extended walk along The Vedge. Here are a few of the sights.

The adventure was almost complete when I found gold in the wasteland. It was only a small amount... the cane walking staff I collected & crafted that day & the toe of my snake boot included for scale:

Sights from Monday's walk.

Sympathetic magic practitioner casts summon snow. The snowflakes are obvious but what is interesting is the figure with the blue head in the center. The part of drawing beneath the head angling down to the left looks like a cloak made of feathers, the central part looks like a single crystalline strand from a snowflake & the part on the right looks like a long narrow fish, like a pike, with red eyes. It's like a tiny god of all that is good in winter :

Disappointment

“You’re not being needy. You’re being human,” Soap argues. He moves Layla closer to him as the two lay in bed. Layla has been sick for three days. Price is finally letting Soap have the day off. That’s what he thought as he lay in bed with Layla asleep on him. The silence in the room is broken by his phone dinging. Price: You’re needed in the briefing room. Great, a meeting. Soap sighs. He suspects it’s about new intel, which would require his presence. Soap sighs and gets out of bed. Soap scrawls a note and runs out of the room.

Layla wakes up disappointed. Damn it, Price. You said Soap could have a day off. Layla knows something important must have come up. She puts her boots and hoodie on, looking to go to the briefing room.

“You have a lot of courage to interrupt a meeting,” Price comments. There is no anger in his voice. “You’re not in 141 yet, which means you can’t be here. Something came up that required Soap to be part of this.” Layla sighs, disappointed. She knows Price is right about her not being allowed to stay. She leaves the room. The others wish she could stay and learn what it’s like to be in a meeting discussing intel, but they all understand the risk. This could turn into Layla being kidnapped and tortured to spill the details.

 A few hours pass. The meeting ends in time for dinner. Soap enters the common room, knowing Layla would be there rather than in her room. She lies on the sectional, watching TV. “Come on, time for dinner,” Soap tells her.

Layla and Soap enter the mess hall. Soap leads her to the table where Gaz, Ghost, and Price are waiting. Layla sees two plates of food waiting for them. “I figured you’re tired of soup,” Soap comments. “I made chicken instead.” The two sit at the table. Layla looks at her plate of chicken, carrots, and mashed potatoes. She cut a piece of chicken and can’t believe the flavor she’s tasting. She can’t remember tasting a flavor like this before, but she also struggles to remember things prior to being in the lab. Layla isn’t sure if she’s ever had this chicken. “You like that, huh?” Soap smiles. Layla nods and continues eating. Glad part of your trauma isn’t extreme picky eating. Soap thinks. But you’re still underweight.
