SCW-59: cw19 asphodel - aokigahara, the black sea of trees | TALsounds & steffi neuhuber - barren is  c72 | split Steffi Neuhuber and Natalie Chami (TALsounds), two of the three founders of Screaming Claws, recently put out a split with Turkish sound project Asphodel (Atay İlgün / Alper Yıldırım) on German label Cosmic Winnetou (run by Screaming Claws collaborator Guenter Schlienz). "Barren Is," a series of Chami and Neuhuber's live sessions, was recorded without overdubs in Chami's Chicago apartment. Neuhuber, who lived with Chami for a month after a chance meeting at an experimental show, uses contrabass recorder, while Chami provides vocals, synths, and loops.  From Cosmic Winnetou: "The musicians sought to build a shared language in their short time together, pieced together from delay trails, long loops, suspended synth tones, and whispered vocalization." chrome tape, home-dubbed in real time. professionally printed j-card. artwork by sylvia monnier. limited to 75 hand-numbered copies. SCW-58: dustin wong / TALsounds / Mukqs at The Billiken Club on May 4th, 2014 Natalie Chami (TALsounds) and Max Allison (Mukqs), who usually play together in Good Willsmith, journeyed down to St. Louis this past weekend to play solo sets with the great, wonderful, extremely talented Dustin Wong. Mukqs entranced the crowd with his twisted video game/carnival-inspired set, TALsounds summoned magical spirits with her synths, and Dustin Wong showed us all the power of loops. And we got some video clips of it all!

SCW-57: Kanoi - "Sleepy Star" This week's Screaming Claws track, "Sleepy Star," comes from Austrian ambient artist (say that three times fast) Kanoi, a project of Benjamin Kantschieder formed in 2010. Kanoi's got a new album coming out in May on the German label clostridiumrecords called "From the City to the Stars," so apparently the cosmos have been a big source of inspiration. SCW - 49: This week's Screaming Claws release presents a dynamic session of drone improv from Chicago-based guitarist/producer Cinchel (Jason Shanley). Shanley pours out a series of lush, sustained tones, dripping with details gathered from his rig of analog and digital processes. He deepens the atmosphere with moments of consonant bell performance, and segues through a diverse suite of overlapping loops, ascending to new plateaux of astral bliss.

I got to see Natalie Chami of Good Willsmith perform at TALsounds last Friday at the Observatory. It blew my mind. Aside from outstanding Synth work, Natalie has an operatic voice, which she studied at Northwestern University.

SCW - 43 : kyle landstra - "Unveiling Open Canopy Light" This week's Screaming Claws session comes from Kyle Landstra, the prolific Chicago-based ambient experimenter responsible for cosmic cassette-shaped artifacts on labels like Tranquility Tapes, Field Studies, and previous Screaming Claws artist Günter Schlienz's own Cosmic Winnetou. The multi-instrumentalist's expansive "Unveiling Open Canopy Light" spreads out a mosaic of analog synth loops, contrasting chiming upper register arpeggios with lush low-end swells and confident lead phrases from his Roland Juno 106. If that description comes off as typical in the context of today's ambient underground, the reality of Landstra's gorgeous live take - all structural control and subtle tone manipulation, coupled with careful mixing - proves more transportive than I can hope to convey with words on this screen. SCW-42: This week's Screaming Claws post unites the drifting improvisations of l'éternèbre (Brian Griffith and Natalie Chami) with a film by resident SC video guru Zara Ruckus. "Orange Blood" plays out as a patchwork of competing synth loops and delay trails, anchored by Brian's bass work and further fragmented by the onset of noise. As the duo threads lead and supporting voices into their propulsive swell, found film footage passes through watercolor paint, skewing cartoon vestiges into a kinetic montage possessed of uncanny A/V synchronization.

SCW-38 / SCR-7: The Screaming Claws Collective's delayed improvisation "Sea Wake" combines no overdub takes by (and in this order) greyghost (Brian Griffith, Los Angeles), cosmic-winnetou (Günter Schlienz, Stuttgart, Germany), s_safari (Steffi Neuhuber, Vienna, Austria), and TALsounds (Natalie Chami, Chicago) into a session of overlapping drones, synth pads, and abstracted lead voices. Vocals float through a haze of delay-smeared bass guitar and modular synth warmth as accordion phrases punctuate the arrhythmic drift. As the session unfolds, the mire of looped and live elements swells into a denouement of pitch-shifted wails and all-consuming drones before spiraling back into silence. #screamingclaws www.screamingclaws.com
