movement - research

starting on Monday the 13th we were sent to the library to pick out 4 books in relation to our chosen electives. Ideally to blend together those mediums a bit.

I chose James Hall on The Self-Portrait for painting.

Poetry in (e)motion: The illustrated words of Scroobius Pip. sorta for animation because Paul had shown us some comic book related formats and styles for animation.

Vertigo of Color; Matisse + Derain and the origins of fauvism. Also for painting as it's a painting style I enjoy and I think it would be cool to mimic some elements of this style in general and in an animation.

A Smile In the Mind.

For graphic design. "witty thinking in graphic design". as I found using humour in last semesters project to be quite effective. I find it interesting to find out how to effectively create clever design that's humorous.

Lone Island - (2020, 12 x 3 min episodes) - A man goes on a dating show but because of COVID, no one else goes on with him. He ends up falling in love with a plant and a football and a mop.

Success Story* - (2009, 45 min BBC radio play) - When Ray's low-budget film is picked up by a major studio his dreams of Hollywood start to become a reality. Then, holed up in a hotel room doing endless publicity interviews, he finds the past coming back to bite him. Brett is the playwright, not acting in this. I like it but I'm a sucker for radio plays. *Not available on BBC so linking to the internet archive site for listening. Proper BBC page here.

Would love to see the Soulmates origin story short film (For Life) but can’t find it online. Have I missed any others? Yes, some older ones, but let’s chalk that up to them being pre-YouTube, and not worry too much about it.

And what have we learned from this adventure?  A 20-year overnight success? He’s not joking. Brett likes exploring relationships. Eyebrows and cunnilingus come up a fair bit. Let's see about the accents.

Lastly. The Rope - (2005, 11 min) - Here for completeness but I would not really recommend watching it if you’re look for something in the vein of Ted Lasso. Very arthouse. In black and white. Award winning but probably not everyone's cup of tea and you don’t see much of Brett. You get enough of the idea from the trailer (3 min).
