“I’m fine!” No she wasn’t, and snapping at him wasn’t going to help. Sherlock was decided not okay, spiralling as she came down from the high, jittery with the need for another one already. Home for the holidays, though, it wouldn’t be easy to get and she knew she was facing a hard time.
All the more reason to get Quentin away. She didn’t want him to see her like this, didn’t want him to know. Too much hot shame shot through her, too much worry that he’d follow in her steps.
“Go away,” she shrieked at him, voice rising with panic. Don’t look at me. Don’t see me. Don’t be like me.
He’s about ready to insist that he go get their mother but then-- she YELLS at him. It isn’t a tone of voice he’s heard from her before, so this alone is enough to leave his voice hitched in the back of his throat. Quentin doesn’t want to admit it, but he can feel the tears threatening to drip free and trail down his cheeks. All he wanted to do was help. They didn’t speak much, but he could tell something was very wrong. He was worried-- scared for her, so to have her yell at him-- it was just enough to make him cry. At first, he doesn’t move. His feet won’t allow him to do anything but stand there and choke back his emotions. To see a Holmes display emotions was one of the worst things one could do, however, a few tears manage to make their escape. Within seconds, his hands move to wipe them only to have more follow suit.
