Scott Smajor fic recs

one of the first things I do when i want to start reading fics in a new fandom i search "[character i like] fic recs" and get awesome recommendations so i thought i would make a list of some of my fav fics that either have scott featured or are scott-centric.

ill highlight any fics that are explicitly ship-y in purple but just to clear one of these recommendations may not be necessarily 'ship-y' but still have ships in them, just on the basis that the fic is not about the ship itself, so watch out. but also, you can check the tags.

This one is super interesting... I'd describe it as like a sci-fi imagining of the myct universe as a whole but with animal politics. The author describes it as "a dramedy about hybrids in a digital world (both in their Life game and their server hub." i really like this. This fic is the main fic in a series that has a bunch oneshots in the same universe, so if you liked it, check those out too.

Part 68 of The Codfather's Court AU

They argued about it for hours, shouting and sulking and pleading, until Pixlriffs came to find them and silenced them with a disapproving look.

"Scott's beginning to wonder where you two have disappeared to. Which of your ridiculous arguments could possibly be more important than staying by his side right now?"

"No argument, because this conversation is over." Jimmy's sharp look did nothing to stop fWhip's noise of outrage. He returned to Scott's room immediately, leaving Pix to sigh and look at fWhip.

"Tell me what happened."

"Nothing." Pix raised an eyebrow at fWhip's sharp tone, and fWhip winced. "Sorry, sorry. It's just - he's just so stubborn! And frustrating, and hard-headed, and - and - ugh. He made up his mind from the start and now he won't listen to me!"

Jimmy would have already been annoyed by the lack of a direct answer, but Pix was an eternal fount of patience. "Listen to you about what?" He took fWhip's arm and guided him further down the hall.

fWhip's chest tightened, certain Pix would be just as against his idea as Jimmy, but the longer he avoided saying it the longer Pix would simply persist until he was worn down. "...Turning him. I want to turn Scott."

"I see." Pix didn't say anything further until they were in the library. "I don't think it's a good idea."

"Oh, come on!" fWhip yanked his arm out of Pix's grasp, dangerously close to petulantly stomping his foot. "Is being a vampire that much of a bad thing, huh? You think we're some sort of, of monster, to be pitied or tolerated? So much that you'd rather he be dead than like me?"

Pixlriffs clicked his tongue. "Really, my love," he chided gently, and fWhip's cheeks warmed at the rebuke. "That isn't my objection at all. Far from it."

"Then what?" fWhip followed Pix into the stacks, watching him trail his eyes over the spines of tomes that were antiques before his long-dead father had ever been born. "I just want to keep him safe. This is the last measure I can think of."

"I know you do. In that, we are all in agreement." Pix touched the top corner of a book thoughtfully, then changed his mind and moved on. "You and Gem spent very little time with your sire once you were turned, correct?"

fWhip made a noise somewhere between a scoff and a bitter laugh. "Try none at all. We woke up and he was just...gone. Never heard from him again. We had to figure out everything on our own."

Pix gave him a sympathetic glance. "Which means he never taught you how to do certain things. Like how to turn someone safely rather than killing or enthralling them. Can you really say that instinct alone would be enough to guide you through it?"

fWhip thought of Scott's bright eyes turning vacant, of his lively, witty personality dimmed by perpetual starvation and unbreakable obedience, and shuddered.

Pix examined a few more shelves. "And as I suspected, I have nothing that details the process. Even if I did, we have no way of confirming its accuracy." He pulled fWhip to him. "I know you want to keep him safe. But impulsivity often leads to regret."

fWhip snorted. "I mean, Jimmy kept me on impulse, didn't he?"

Pix chuckled. "He did. And while he doesn't regret keeping you, he did come to regret doing so in a way that hurt you." He rubbed the back of fWhip's neck soothingly. "Can you promise me that in this, at least, you won't do something reckless?"

fWhip huffed, but closed his eyes and leaned into him, enjoying the affection. "Yeah, alright. I promise."

fWhip kept his word, but his promise said nothing about not doing his own research. He wrote to Gem, and he didn't tell her why he wanted the information he was asking for, but she could guess easily enough. She spent months tracking down any information she could, and fWhip spent months analyzing it in his spare time, and together they began to draw conclusions they were confident in.

He didn't tell Jimmy what he was doing. Pixlriffs knew, but didn't dissuade him. At least not until fWhip began gathering a few arcane components - not to use! just to have, just in case - and Pix confronted him about them.

"fWhip," he said sternly as he held up an amethyst shard that gleamed an odd shade, "you promised."

"What - oh! No, that's uh - " fWhip snatched the shard away from him. " - for research! Just for research, honest."

Pix sighed. "No amount of research will make this safe, not without experimenting first. Besides, Jimmy will never - "

"Well maybe Jimmy doesn't get to have his way every time," snapped fWhip. "He doesn't always know best. Neither do you."

They were still debating risks and precautions as they made their way to the dining hall, only stopping when Joel asked what had them so riled up. He listened to their respective arguments, then instead of weighing in with his own opinion on whether Scott should be turned, looked at them like they were both stupid.

"And has anyone at all," he said, with a glance down the hall at where Scott and Jimmy were approaching, "bothered to ask Scott what he wants?"

Their chagrined looks answered his question, and he rolled his eyes at them. Later that night, Pixlriffs combed through Scott's hair before braiding it for him. "How would you feel," he said as he twisted cyan strands around themselves, "if your very essence was changed into something unrecognizable from its current form? To have your fate anchored in inherent violence simply to survive?"

Scott blinked at him in the mirror, eyes exhausted and uncomprehending. "I don't - what? I don't think I can riddle today, I'm sorry."

While his recovery had been going well, he was more prone than ever to days of foggy thoughts and confusion, and today was one of them. Pix kissed the top of his head and wrapped his arms around his shoulders. "Sorry. It's not really a riddle. Don't worry about it."

Jimmy gave them a suspicious glance from across the room, and the next afternoon he pulled fWhip aside. "What are you playing at?" he growled. "Trying to talk Pixlriffs into allowing something I've already forbidden is low."

fWhip scoffed. "What, suddenly decided he's not allowed to think for himself anymore? And speaking of low - " He stepped back as Jimmy grabbed for him. " - Forbidding me from saving Scott's life without even considering it? That's low."

Jimmy shoved him against the wall with a snarl. "I have considered it! You're the one who wants to rush into something that's entirely unnecessary!"

"Who's rushing?!" fWhip tried to push him away, knowing it was useless. "I already promised Pix I won't do it recklessly! I just want you to promise me that the next time something happens, if you - " He swallowed hard. " - If something happens and you can't keep him alive, promise you won't get in my way."

"It's unnecessary," Jimmy insisted again. "I'll - we'll protect him."

fWhip stopped shoving and looked up at Jimmy pleadingly. "Jimmy. Please." He put a hand over Jimmy's. "You're a god. I'm a vampire. Pix is...Pix." He smiled at Jimmy's weak laugh. "Compared to Scott, we're functionally immortal. He's...he's very much not."

Jimmy pressed his forehead against fWhip's. "He's still young. Elves live for centuries. There's still a good four or five hundred years before we even need to start thinking about this!"

"Under normal circumstances, sure! But at this rate, we'll be lucky if he sees another decade." fWhip clung to Jimmy to hide the way he trembled. "He's been through so much already. And what happens the next time someone wants to make a political statement? Or he goes for a swim and the undertow pulls him into the rocks? Or something goes wrong in a few years when he's carrying your eggs? Giving birth to your babies?"

Fear and longing alike twisted Jimmy's expression.

fWhip kisses his cheek. "Scott trusts you," he said softly. "Pix trusts you. I trust that if you can't keep him alive, you'll let me do it."

"Okay, we reached a decision," announced Jimmy when they joined Pix and Scott.

Scott paused with his teacup halfway to his mouth. "A decision? On what?"

"Um. Well - " fWhip rubbed the back of neck. Joel was right; they probably really should have talked to Scott about it first.

Scott listened while they explained fWhip's request, the months of deliberation, and the agreement they came to. When they finished he stared at them with such an unreadable expression that both Jimmy and fWhip looked at Pix for help, but except for a slight raise of an eyebrow, Pix only gave them a similarily neutral look.

"Well," said Scott finally, and all three pairs of eyes snapped back to him. "It would have been nice if anyone, at any point during this decision-making process, bothered to ask me directly - " Pix suddenly found the artwork on the wall fascinating as Scott's narrowed gaze turned on him. " - seeing as how it's my life in question."

He looked at Jimmy, and his gaze softened. "But I'm not unhappy with the decision you reached. I'm flattered you all want me around as long as possible, given how long your lifespans will be."

"Of course we do." Jimmy caressed Scott's cheek, smiling when he leaned into the touch. "Why else do you think I made you mine, petal?"

fWhip gazed at the way Scott gazed at Jimmy, his appreciation of how beautiful Scott looked in love helping push away the jealous longing that ached in his chest. Then Scott turned that same look on him, and fWhip could swear he heard the gears in his heart grind to a halt.

Scott loved him.

He knew that, of course. But he'd long assumed he was on a different level than Jimmy, rightfully unable to compete with the depth of devotion Scott held for the divine king who'd saved his life more than once. The softness in Scott's eyes, though, told him something different.

Scott loved him.

"Marry me," fWhip blurted out without thinking.

He turned red as everyone looked at him in surprise. "Uh - I didn't - um - "

Jimmy was going to actually murder him this time.

"Don't you dare," said Scott.

fWhip's stomach dropped, but then Scott's arms were around his neck. "Don't you dare minimize this or play it down," Scott murmured, sighing happily when fWhip held him tightly. "Yes, you silly, silly man! Of course I'll marry you."

"But - " fWhip glanced over, but Jimmy and Pix's expressions were just as soft as Scott's. " - oh."

"Thought you weren't the marrying kind," teased Jimmy, and Scott giggled.

"Oh, shut up," muttered fWhip, burying his face in Scott's hair. But Scott didn't let him hide for long, wriggling around until he could kiss him again and again.
