In a letter published in the scientific journal Nature, a group of scientists is urging the United Nations to make it a war crime to harm the environment during times of conflict. "We call on governments to incorporate explicit safeguards for biodiversity, and to use the commission’s recommendations to finally deliver a Fifth Geneva Convention to uphold environmental protection during such confrontations," the petition reads. Globally, more than 1 million plant and animal species could go extinct because of the chain reactions and ecological collapse caused by climate change. In recent decades, a combination of rampant resource extraction, habitat loss, droughts, and heat waves have endangered much of the world’s wildlife. The northern white rhinos, in particular, have been brought to the edge of oblivion due to the widespread loss of suitable habitats and the relentless poaching of the animals for their horns. The only two surviving female northern white rhinos, Najin and her daughter Fatu, live in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The conservancy not only works to protect wildlife, but also supports the surrounding community with livelihood and education opportunities. And for the guards protecting the animals, the responsibility holds a devotional quality that photographer Justin Mott captures in his series, “No Man’s Land,” on display at the Anastasia Photo Gallery in New York. The photos are part of a larger project Mott is working on called “Kindred Guardians” that showcases the people working to protect the world’s wildlife. The United Nations argues that protecting wildlife and halting biodiversity loss is critical to achieving the Global Goals, but that the march of climate change could undo the progress already made. The Global Goals include specific targets to end wildlife poaching and illegal trafficking, and wildlife rangers, who the UN described the "unsung heroes of wildlife conservation" on World Ranger Day this year, are critical to reaching those targets. United Nations Forum on Forests – 19th session (6 to 10 May 2024).

The United Nations Forum on Forests is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with universal membership. Since its establishment in 2000, the Forum has set many milestones including the first UN Forest Instrument in 2007, the Global Forest Financing Facilitation Network (GFFFN) in 2015, and adoption of the first UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030 and its six Global Forest Goals in 2017. 2024 marks the 19th session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF19).

UNFF19 is a historic session, as the Forum undertakes its midterm review of the International Arrangement on Forests. By assessing progress made and identifying gaps, the review will chart the course towards 2030 – to ensure achievement of the Global Forest Goals and accelerate progress towards the SDGs. The key outcomes of the session will be a High-Level Segment declaration and an omnibus resolution, which will include the outcome of the midterm review as well as the new Quadrennial Programme of Work of the Forum for 2025-2028.
