   PRINCESS MERMISTA ,              

 i’m  writing  you  both  because  i  want  to  express  my  well-wishes  to  the  salinean  people  during  this  time  of  rebuilding    and    because  bow  will  not  stop  asking  me  when  we,   the  four  of  us,   will  be  able  to  get  together  again.      obviously  one  of  these  matters  is  much  less  pressing  than  the  other,    but  i’m  sure  your  subjects  will  understand  you  ducking  out  on  your  important  duties  so  we  can  go  infest  some  grimy  dive  bar  in  seaworthy  soon    (  but  we’re  leaving  the  horse  behind.   ).      until  then,   both  you  and  sea  hawk  are  dearly  missed  in  bright  moon.         

   i  know  that  in  the  past,   during  my  mother’s  reign,   my  kingdom  was  not  always  the  most  helpful.       it  has  been  hard  to  criticize  her  tactics  in  ruling  since  her  passing,   but  i’ve  had  to  do  so  in  order  to  move  bright  moon  forward  into  the  modern  etherian  world.      even  if  these  issues  were  put  behind  us  when  you  joined  the  alliance  all  those  years  ago,    i  still  want  to  make  a  deal  out  of  extending  an  olive  branch  to  you  and  your  people.      no  matter  what  you  need,    whether  it  be  extra  troops  for  your  staff  or  homes  for  your  subjects  to  stay  in  while  theirs  are  being  rebuilt,    bright  moon  will  help  you  work  out  something.          horde  prime  may  be  gone,   but  it’s  important  that  the  alliance  sticks  together  to  thwart  any  future  threats     (  yes,  i  knocked  on  wood  after  writing  that.  ).         

    the  formalities  of  all  this  official  writing  is  tiring.      i’m  sure  you,   with  your  dry  wit  and  all,   relate   -   so  i’ll  leave  you  with  this:       not  that  i  really  have  time  to  read,   but  you  should  recommend  your  favorite  mer  -  mystery  book  in  your  reply.

       SHE IS WHAT’S LEFT OF                 the  heart  of  etheria.       she  is  what  the  heart  was  supposed  to  be  in  the  first  place;    all  the  glory,   all  the  love,   it  all  lives  in  mara  as  her  spirit  overlooks  the  coast  of  salineas.         she  is  tethered  to  the   MAGIC   of  the  planet,   to  the  nature  that  it  livens,   meaning  that  she  is  free  to  roam  and  observe  as  she  pleases.        PRINCESS  MERMISTA     has  been  kind  enough  to  accompany  her  in  admiring  the  outskirts  of  the  kingdom.       ❛      i  never  got  to  see  this  part  of  etheria  when  i  was  alive.     ❜       mara  says  warmly.       it  is  strange  that  there  is  almost   NO  STRANGENESS   in  referring  to  herself  as  dead,    or  something  adjacent.       perhaps  it’s  because  she  feels  more  alive  than  ever.       she  can  hear  the  waves  and  watch  them  lap  lazily  at  the  shore.      ❛    it’s  beautiful.      you  must  be   PROUD   to  call  it  yours.      ❜

        SHE THINKS,      among  the  chaos  and  debauchery  of  the  seaworthy  bar,   that  this  may  be  her  first  moment  of  pure  indulgence  since  the  war’s  end.     and  she’s  not  even   ENJOYING  IT.      glimmer  stares  at  her  reflection  in  her  glass,   alcohol  winking  back  at  her,   daring  her  to  just  let  her  cares  go.        bow  and  sea  hawk  are  off  doing  just  that     (  singing  some  dumb  song  up  on  the  bar.  ),    which  leaves  the  queen  beside   MERMISTA   at  their  table.        “  do  you  guys  come  here  often ?  ”        is  what  she  decides  to  break  the  silence  with.        but  in  all  fairness,    there   IS   a  drunken  sailor  throwing  up  in  his  boots  across  the  room.        “ it’s   ...   fun  !      maybe  not  one  hundred  percent  what  i’m  used  to,   but,    being  out  at   ALL   is  nice.       thanks  for  the  invite. ”

     TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT,   IT BREAKS HER HEART.                it’s  no  secret  that  mermista  is  aloof,    that  she  has  trouble  expressing  her  emotions    :    the  fall  of  salineas  has  pushed  her  to  what  apparently  is  her   BREAKING  POINT.       there’s  no  other  way  to  describe  this,   nor  is  there  a  word  powerful  enough  for  the  sinking  feeling  in  glimmer’s  gut  as  the  princess’s  arms  wrap  around  her  suddenly.         THIS  IS  ALL  HER  FAULT.        mermista’s  kingdom  burns  before  them,   the  salt  air  that  was  once  so  refreshing  tinged  with  a  smoky  smell.        it  clouds  her  senses,    clouds  her  judgement,   fills  her  with  a   HATE   for  hordak      (   for  catra,    for  double  trouble,  for  the  horde  in  its  entirety.   )      so  heavy  that  she  swears  she  feels  the  cliffside  groan  beneath  her  weight.        glimmer  looks  past  mermista’s  shoulder,   past  bow,  past  adora—     so  far  out  towards  the  horizon  that  the  world  around  her  almost  ceases  to  exist.       as  the  tears    (  warm  with  rage.   )     begin  to  stream  down  her  face,    she  lifts  her  arms,    finally  embracing  the  fallen  salinean.    

    ❛      i’m  going  to  fix  this,   mermista.      ❜          it  is  a  dark  promise.      there  is  a  quiet  intensity  to  her  voice,    one  that  wasn’t  there  when  she  was  giving  her    ROUSING   speech  only  a  moment  ago.          ❛     no  matter  what,    i  am  going  to  get  you  your  kingdom  back.    ❜

“ i feel my whole life as a loner, thinking i didn’t need anybody. but now i’m not so sure. “

      SHE UNDERSTANDS WHERE MERMISTA IS COMING FROM.        though  the  salinean  has  always  been  a  bit  dry,    glimmer  took  that  to  be  part  of  her  charm;    never  before  would  she  have  thought  of  her  as   ...   lonely.       not  like   HER   at  least,   a  princess  doomed  to  the  cushy  tower  of  emptiness  that  was  her  room  at  bright  moon.       yes,   she’s  always  had  bow,   but  bow  is  only    ONE  PERSON,    something  she  had  learned  the  hard  way.     that  sense  of  community    (  and the jealousy that came with  it,   briefly,  )    that  came  with  being  part  of  the  princess  alliance  had  introduced  her  to  a  whole  different  way  of  life.      and  it  seems  like  mermista,   in  the  new  warmth  glimmer  senses  from  her,   feels  similarly.        this  must  be  what  it  feels  like  to  have  friends   (  TO  BE  LOVED.   ).       and  the  feeling,   sweetened  by  the  war’s  end,   is  nicer  than  the  queen  could  have  ever  anticipated.      

     “ —  I GET IT.  ”      they’re  sat  side  by  side  now,    on  the  edge  of  a  campfire  in  the  middle  of  the  whispering  woods.      sea  hawk  regales  the  alliance    (  stationed there for the time being,   before the reclamation of their kingdoms.  )    with  yet  another  daring,   possibly  fictional  story.      glimmer  thinks  she  sees  mermista  smile.       “  he  was  so  worried  about  you.       he  tried  to  keep  all  our  spirits  up,  but   ...   everyone  could  tell.  ”      it’s  said  with  admiration  for  the  man.         at  his  side,   bow  listens  to  his  story  in  wonder,   and  her  cheeks  flush  pink.      “  i  used  to  be  so  scared  of  change.       and  it’s  still  scary,  but   ...    beautiful  too,   maybe. ”

he’s not gonna say anything.  nope.  it’s fine.    her current negative energy is not at all having an effect on those around her ,  seeping into his skin like a foul odor that will take some serious scrubbing to get off.   it’s not like one more aggravated  ‘ uggghhh ’  might actually send him over the edge.   aang will just sit here ,  quietly ,  and not.  say.  anything.

he’s gonna say something.   the boy tries one ,  two ,  three times to speak up ;  straightens from his slumped posture ,  extends a hand to grab attention.  nothing.    it’s with a huff that aang finally just blurts out :      ❝ okay, you are really putting a crimp in my harmony. ❞           and ,  true to his utterly gentle nature ,  immediately follows the outburst with a sheepish apology.           ❝ sorry. ❞
