but remember how it used to be a thing to hold up a hand for a high five then pull it away at the last second and say psych ! my parents' dog has mastered the concept of the psych out. except her version is to stand at the door, pawing / barking to come in and as soon as you put your hand on the door to open it and let her in, she runs back out into the yard, turns around and looks at you like ha ! got you ! maybe she wants want you go come outside with her, you may think. no, she doesn't. if you do go outside, she will immediately walk away and utterly ignore your existence... until you go inside. then two minutes later she's standing at the door, pawing / barking to come in and i'm sure you can see where this is going. it's apparently the greatest game in the world to her.

but what if ' friend of kyoshi ' became slang for lgbtq+ ? only aang never got the memo or it became a thing after he turned into a popsicle. so when someone asks him are you a friend of kyoshi ? he just innocently : yeah ! i mean i guess so ? i don't know. it's kinda complicated. they walk away thinking aang is questioning his sexuality. aang walks away thinking what a weird way to ask about my past lives.

nobody asked but re : air nomads and the air temples. what we see of the nomads in atla is just a tiny little glimpse of the overall nation and they weren't called nomads for nothing. most nomads were exactly that— nomadic ! they didn't live at the temples. they traveled the world and were free to come and go as they pleased between temples. the monks ( a gender neutral term here ) were largely the ones that chose to live at the temples full time both in pursuit of enlightenment and to serve the others of their nation.

i've said before each temple had/has a specialty : the northern and southern raised and trained young nomads , eastern cared for bison and focused on spiritual pursuits , western was the knowledge center with the great library. monks chose their temple based on what they wanted to do , where the greatest need was , and/or where their skills best fit.

every nomad spent some time at the temples. it's where they learned airbending. it's where they went for holidays and events. it's where they could always find a home should they need one. but the vast majority of nomads spent most of their lives out in the world. even those that had permanent homes in the areas around the temples still traveled often. the further away from/before the war we go , the more common it was to see nomads in other nations. it was the rising tensions and imminent war that created a more reclusive society with nomads avoiding fire nation territory when possible or withdrawing completely to the areas around temples.

prior to that , the sky was dotted with bison. people of the other nations knew the air nomads as friends and as a wise , loving , generous , and joyful people. their nomadic lifestyle even helped connect the other nations in little ways unnoticed until they were gone. intentional or not , they carried little pieces of their travels with them : trinkets gifted , stories retold , adventures shared. their warm nature fostered connection. their understanding nurtured empathy. their liveliness encouraged whimsy. the nomads' withdrawal contributed to the other nations' isolation and their ultimate demise blows joy off the map completely.

in atla , we see the nomads through aang's eyes and he never sees ALL of his culture. for numerous reasons. the biggest one is that he was too young to have experienced ( and really understood the importance of ) a lot of it. funnily enough though , the way aang travels with his friends is very similar to how a lot of nomads lived. they went where they pleased or were needed , in search of fun experiences and visiting friends / favorite places. he unwittingly continues the traditions of his people and i think that's beautiful.
