Sibling Rivalry
The Sister is the companion beer to Fremont Brewing’s the Brother. The Sister made with the same base of pale, white wheat, and Vienna malts as the Brother, but somehow it has a whole different feel. It’s murkier, despite being brewed with very bright hops. Calypso, Mosaic, Ekuanot-- they’re all supposed to taste fruity and tropical. All I get is a generic red fruit flavor, more like a raspberry than a mango. It’s earthy. It’s muddy. I think someone stepped on this batch. But at least the finish is bone dry.
Reuben's Brews bits and bobs IPA. Apparently they do these every year to test new brewing methods they like. I don't really know what they are testing here but it makes for a super easy to drink beer. Very yeller, too. It's juicy, with like almost melon like mellow sweetness and then a little tartness at the end. Light malt and stuff too. It's like too easy to drink for being seven percent but I'm also like 7% beer by weight so I'll be okay.
Elysian Brewing Company (Ab-inbev owned) “Hawaiian Sunburn” Pineapple Habanero Sour. 5.3% ABV
Appearance: light witbier looking stuff, kind of has a bright Pineapple gold tint to it.
Smell: pilsner malt, sour yeast, pineapple juice.
Taste: very subtle but very complex. I get wheaty sweet malt, a slight Habanero tang, a pineapple sweetness and acridity, a wild grassy yeast sour funkiness, and a tart taste on the tip of the tongue.
Mouthfeel: sweet malt and sour and Habanero tang remains in the mouth for a while.
Overall: a good beer, a little overrated. Very subtle, they could have made it more sour especially with the pineapple, and more hot. Someone said it tasted like kombucha and it really kinda does. It’s super easy to drink and the alcohol level sneaks up on you. 3.8/5.
Elysian Brewing Co. Space Dust IPA- 8.2% ABV. A: a nice golden amber with nice head retention. S: sweet malt, piney and citrusy notes with almost a wheaty aspect to the yeast. T: bitter chinook hops with lots of pine notes and some orange peel flavor backing it up. Pretty sweet on the aftertaste. M: pretty drinkable for 8.2%. Bitterness, malt sweetness, and piney sudsiness lingers on the tongue. O: I finally tried Space Dust, the much renowned and often overpriced IIPA from Elysian. Impression: an overall "meh". Kinda good, quality ingredients and all that, but a little one dimensional and the hops don't shine much. 3.8/5.
