Seattle Fact #Eleventeen:
Yeah yeah we all know about Seattle being built on top of the old city, but did you know that old Seattle is still occupied? Its subterranean districts are now shared by ettercaps, dretch, draegloths, and chitines.
Farmers’ markets are every tuesday and thursday.
Seattle’s Ork Underground was built by exploited dwarven children
The Seattle Underground predates the Awakening – it’s a common occurrence in larger cities where, over time, people just said “frag it” after a fire, flood, or other disaster, and just built a new city on top of the old one.
Picking up the story in the Seattle Sourcebook (1st Edition):
It was not until this century that the city’s first Orks, Trolls, and Dwarfs took control of the forgotten basements and paved-over streets, and began building tunnels of their own.
Now, for fans of classical fantasy, that Orks, Trolls, and Dwarfs would live underground plays to well-known tropes, as do Elves preferring to “live in structures built of living plants”. Which is fine – Shadowrun was already going against stereotypes by mixing fantasy and cyberpunk. So I’m fine with the Ork Underground in theory. What bugs me is…
Construction almost came to a complete halt when a violent disagreement between Dwarfs and Orks resulted in the Dwarfs leaving during the early 20s.
Wait, what?
SIXTH WORLD HISTORY LESSON
The return of magic to the world, the Awakening, occurred throughout the year of 2011. While the date of December 24th is given as the Day It All Happened, the birth of Elves and Dwarfs, called Unexplained Generic Expression (UGE) at the time, was occurring as early as January of that year. While there are hints of “spike babies” born before the Awakening, it’s still the case that most Dwarfs and Elves were born no earlier than 2011.

Goblinization, the later event when Orks and Trolls emerged into the world, did occur on a specific date: April 30th, 2021. Unlike UGE, which was only evidenced at birth, goblinization happened to people of all ages.

This construction, then, on the Ork Underground couldn’t have started until 2021. On this date, there were no dwarfs in existence that were older than 10 years old. Plus, they were ejected in a “violent disagreement” during the early 20s, which is what, 2024 at the latest? When the first dwarfs were no older than 13?
Not only were Orks and Trolls using dwarven children in the construction of the Ork Underground, these children must have been physically assaulted by adult Orks and Trolls.

Hey there, sailor
Few are aware, even among longtime Seattle natives, but deep within the Seattle Underground there is a complex platforming level. Those who have found it compare it to some of the best Metroidvania games they’ve ever played.
