What happened to your character:
Who: Joseph Parker II & his army unit
What: Ambush during a night raid
When: December 31, 2013
Where: Iraq
Why: He was stationed over seas and his unit was ambushed
Why did you pick this event: Because it's the reason he was discharged from the military and moved to Seattle
Describe how this affected your character:
Physical damages: Gunshot wound to the chest, gunshot wound to the knee which resulted in a shattered kneecap. When being transported to a medical center after the attack, he went into cardiac arrest and technically died, but was able to be brought back to life.
Mental damages: General Anxiety Disorder & Panic Disorder.
Emotional damages: Blames himself for not being able to save more men, feels guilty for surviving.
Do they still suffer from it:
Long-term damages: Still suffers from nightmares, panic attacks, & anxiety attacks every now and then, has limited motion in his knee & has trouble standing up after sitting on the ground. Whenever something bad happens to someone and he was there, he will blame himself for not being able to prevent the event / injuries from happening.
How does this affect your character's health/life?:
Medical issues: Still has low grade symptoms of GAD and Panic Disorder. Is often triggered by other traumatic events; death, sever injuries, etc.
How does it change their day to day activities: Sometimes he will go days without sleep due to nightmares, if / when he has a panic attack his entire day is stopped and he is often "not himself" for a few days.
How have they recovered? If they have:
Medication / Medical Procedures: Kneecap replacement surgery, heavy & regular pain killers.
Who helped them through it: Parker's sisters, mother, therapists, and rehab workers. Also his dog, Captain.
Do they talk about it openly or is it pushed to the back of their mind: He will openly talk about it if it does come up in conversation, but he often plays it off like it doesn't bother him. Sure, his mental, emotional, & physical state has improved since the incident, but there are still some lingering effects from it.
