Description by the Royal Collection Trust:

The dog in this photograph was found by Captain John Hart Dunne of the 99th Regiment after the Summer Palace near Beijing (Peking, as it was then known) had been looted on 8 October 1860 during the Second Opium War. On his return to England Dunne presented her to Queen Victoria for 'the Royal Collection of dogs'. She was one of the first Pekingese dogs in Britain and her name makes rather ironic reference to her origins and acquisition.

The Battle of the Bogue was fought between British and Chinese forces at the Humen strait (Bogue), Guangdong province, China, on 12–13 November 1856 during the Second Opium War. The British captured the forts in the Wangtong Islands on 12 November and the forts in Anunghoy Island the next day. 

A wollie that shows an event is very rare. Normally, Sailors made woolen pictures of the ships they had served on.

Photograph of one of Queen Victoria's dogs, a Pekingese called Looty. The dog is asleep on a chair with a high, ornately carved wooden back.

Looty was the first Pekingese dog in Britain, having been brought back from China following the Second Opium War and presented to Queen Victoria in April 1861. Looty was also painted by F W Keyl (RCIN 406974).

In some accounts it’s posited this dog was “saved” from the ransacking vs. stolen. I think the name says it all...

Pattern 1837 Sword of the 1st Regiment of Foot (Royal Scots) from the British Empire dated to 1861 on display at the Museum of the Royal Regiment of Scotland in Edinburgh, Scotland

This sword belonged to Ensign John Wilson Smith of the Royal Scots. Following the vicotry in the Crimean War the battalions of the regiment were sent off to fight in Britain colonial wars in India and China. Wilson used this sword during the fighting of the Second Opium War where Britain and France fought to legalise the Opium trade to Qing dynasty China. Opium is incredibly addictive and damaging to peoples health and to communities. Despite this, the British and French empires wanted it traded in China for profit.
