I can’t believe just how dumb Hot Pursuit is. Moreover I can’t believe just how much I laughed. During most Manhattan screenings I love nothing more than to stay and chew the fat with my critic colleagues. This time, I raced out lest anyone confirm that, yes, it was I who was guffawing during this predictable, hokey, retrograde comedy. It was a shame similar to getting drunk at the office Christmas party.

How would you describe The Secret Loves of Geek Girls anthology?

I hope you don’t mind I make this response public.

It’s completely beautiful. I was the book designer in addition to writing an essay, and I kept nearly crying at several points while laying out the books. 

For years and years, I thought I was strange and alone when it came to relationships. I cloaked my own fandom beginnings with my spouse behind a story to make it more “acceptable.” This book encapsulates everything about being a geek girl and about finding love and identity through fandom. Not only do the essays and comics talk about finding other people to love but learning to love yourself, which is the most important love of all.

My favorites in the book were:

“Levelling Up Your Dating Profile” by Loretta Jean (how I wish I’d read this 10 years ago)

“Yes, No, Maybe” by Megan Kearney (my absolute favorite item in the book that makes me tear up repeatedly)

“They Bury You in White” by Laura Neubert

“4 Fictional Happy Endings” by Diana McCallum

“Rise of the Late Bloomer’ by Hope Nicholson

“Love in the Time of Ethernet” by Natalie Zina Walschots

“Better Than Fiction” by Sarah Winifred Seale

and my own “How Fanfic From an American Girl Captured an English Boy” (because hey, I am biased)
