Reading Tress -> Yumi -> Sunlit is such an incredible series of “oh this place sucks!”, “Oh God this is even worse”, then finally “What the fuck is wrong with you Sanderson why would you even make this hellscape exist??”

But… at least they’re all better than the setting of the last Secret Project… shudders

Another piece inspired by Opalite, but make it Tress of the Emerald Sea! It’s a bit of a different kind of fanciful than I usually draw, and it wound up being more complicated than I anticipated! The rowboat, the liquid look of the tea… it was a good challenge!

Btw if you haven’t read Tress of the Emerald Sea, I’m going to stand on my Brandon Sanderson soapbox and urge you to read it with the zeal of a sidewalk preacher. If you like The Princess Bride, unconventional heroines, and unique worldbuilding, go check it out!

Goodness I cannot stop thinking about how excited I am for the Fires of December, bc what an absolutely incredible, buckwild premise the book has

Like, imagine, you've lived out your life, and it hasn't been easy. Your mother died in childbirth, and you were raised by the local innkeepers, who didn't neglect you but didn't fully love you either. People found you odd and unsettling, and you often felt alone. At 21, you got married to a man you did not love, who was awful to you because you could not have children, and you left the day he hit you. By a stroke of luck he became fabulously wealthy, the town's mayor, and he took it out on you. To make a living, you learned medicine, and then you attended and fell in love with the town's reeve and his three children. You learned to read to tutor them. You had been living in a small town so isolated that you were unaware while the ripples of the larger society's collapse made its way down the drying river (THE DEMON BLOOD RIVER BTW) to your home. The townspeople got sick and started dying all around you as you did your best to attend to them. Your love and his children died. Your old husband died. Your foster parents died. The sickness never touched you. The remaining people whisper that because of your learning and your knowledge of medicine, you are a witch who cursed this place. You pass away at eighty, frozen and alone.

And then you wake up on your twenty first birthday, and none of that actually happened.

so i just finished the stormlight archive

and what the actual heck. I did not just read 5,000+ pages in 3 months to be left on a cliffhanger until 2031. what the heck dude.

That being said, totally worth it for me.

This will have spoilers fyi.

Top 5 Characters:

Kaladin - obviously, how could I not love my depressed little angel with a spear. I enjoyed reading about a character with depression where the depression was not the whole plot. He had to learn how to manage his depression and PTSD while saving the world. So he had a lot of emotional weight for me, but I also loved that he was just so grumpy. He cared so much about his friends and family and fought to save them and they all call him a grumpypants because he is and I love him for that.

Adolin - Adolin grew on me throughout the series and idk if this is a hot take, but he had my favorite arc in Wind and Truth in Azir. It is just so fun to have a character in a fantasy world who just doesn't get powers. All of the abilities he has are through practice and practice and practice. Also I'm a big believer in seeing characters with disabilities on page and screen. So even if it was just for the last half of the fifth book, it was interesting to see him grapple with losing a limb and figuring out what he is supposed to do now that he can't fight, which has been how he views his identity the whole series. Also he is such a sweet guy and I loved all of his interactions with Maya and Kaladin and everybody. Also, you have to appreciate a character with some daddy issues.

Lift - you just have to appreciate some good comic relief and how she just such a bad influence in such a good way to everyone. Also she has the Radiant powers that I would want. I mean controlling friction and healing. That's pretty baller.

Navani - Navani was such a mid character for me until Rhthym of War in which I went, hell yeah. This lady is freaking awesome. Seeing how she battles self-esteem issues and didn't feel worthy to be called a scholar as she is literally queen and literally making ground breaking discoveries changing the face of the war. She is just so smart and persuasive and dedicated. I love her.

Syl - She is just so silly goofy and positive and unafraid to call it like it is. But throughout the series, seeing her change and grow and empathize has been phenominal, really giving a magical creature heart. Also she put a rat in Kaladin's boot and she worked really hard on that, so how could she not be in my top 5?

I also loved all of Bridge 4, chiri chiri, wit (obviously), Jasnah, Yangawan, Szeth, and pattern. Omigosh, pattern kills me; he is so funny. Also all the plot twists for shallan were great, and while the multiple personalities made me not like reading about her as much, she is a masterfully well done character.

Taravangian is also such a good villain. I get excited during a Taravangian chapter.

I can't believe I have to wait til 2031 to find out what happens to everyone because I need to know what happens to Sigzil, Kaladin, Adolin, SZETH, EVERYBODY.

Brando Sando is truly a master of getting me attatched to minor characters, so I just will struggle for the next 5 years WAITING.

Noo, had to bust out the writing-the-super-important-finale-to-the-first-half-of-my-magnum-opus-but-ooh-let’s-squeeze-another-one-in-there-shall-we?? Last year wasn’t enough, the flood gates have been opened and now they will never close
