Lost My Home Again - April Update:

- I've found several rentals to apply to, which are either currently available or be will available before my lease ends

- Due to my current credit score and lack of income (because of disability), there are extra hurdles I have to overcome in order to be approved for tenancy:

A) Finding a guarantor/co-signer for the rent (which will be 100% covered by my housing voucher anyway); or

B) Getting enough money to pay double the first month's rent as a security deposit (and some places have extra admin fees that have to be paid on top of the security deposit)

- I've started reaching out to local nonprofits in my city to ask for help covering security deposits; so far all the places I've spoken to have funds dedicated to helping specifically with rent and/or utilities, but not security deposits

- The lease for my current apartment is still scheduled to end on May 31st, 2026, and I do not currently have a new home secured yet; therefore I'm still facing the looming possibility of becoming homeless for the second time in my life this year

When moving out, make sure to get your security deposit back

This is vitally important: before—not after!—you pay your last rent check, ask your landlord about your security deposit. Get them to commit, in writing (if it’s not already on the lease), when and how they will determine how much you get back and how you’ll be receiving the funds. Provide them with your new address and contact information so they definitely know how to reach you after you’ve moved out.

As part of this discussion, schedule a walk-through with them for when you’re fully moved out and have completed all cleaning and necessary repairs. Take your own pictures during that walk-through so they know that you have proof of exactly how you left the place. You should both be present for the walk-through. Don’t let them do it without you.

I’m not trying to shit on landlords. I know the vast majority are decent human beings! But on the off-chance you have a villainous landlord shitty enough to try to keep your security deposit for no good reason, you need to take steps to defend your money.

The Fit Hits The Sham

Our security deposit for the house was $2600. This was loaned to Dave by the guy he has been working for. The agreement was that Dave would work it off. Now this guy is demanding his money and backing out of the agreement.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you that we are scared out of our minds at being homeless again. I know I can't physically do it anymore. So, we are stuck having to try to raise that money asap.

I was waiting for something to happen. Nothing ever goes smoothly in my life. It's been one shit show after another since 2014. Plus, @helly-watermelonsmellinfellon both agreed that we didn't think this place was going to be permanent. The way fate makes us its whipping boy has caused us to not have much hope.

This really sucks because the holidays are around the corner, and we don't even have any money to do anything. Heck, we don't even have money to get the propane tank filled for heat.
