Lesser Seedcracker Pyrenestes minor

Found in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. It usually forages in pairs low in the undergrowth, or sometimes on the ground, feeding on grass and other seeds, including rice and the large hard seeds of the bamboo Olyra latifolia.

November 14, 2021 - Lesser Seedcracker (Pyrenestes minor)

Found in eastern Africa in parts of Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, these estrildid finches live in undergrowth and grass, often around streams and wetlands and in woodlands and the edges of forests. They eat grass seeds and probably some insects, foraging low in vegetation and on the ground. Males do most of the nest construction, building messy oval structures with short entrance tunnels from grass, reeds, and banana leaves in trees or bushes. Both parents incubate the eggs.

September 15, 2016 - Crimson Seedcracker, Brown-backed Seedcracker, or Western Seedcracker (Pyrenestes sanguineus)

These estrildid finches are found in southwestern Africa, in the Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ivory Coast. Foraging in small flocks or pairs on or near the ground, they eat rice, grass and sedge seeds, and feed some insects to their chicks. Their contact call is described as a soft “tsut tsut” sound. One of three species of seedcrackers, all three have thick bills and crimson plumage on their faces.
