Wrecker, the big guy, appeared in his vision then. Approaching from the side, arms outstretched. It took a moment for him to realize Wrecker was trying to take Echo. Fire ignited in Fives’ chest. His arms tightened around the man in his arms, still laying lax.
“Don’t touch him!” Fives yelled. Wrecker’s hand recoiled, unsure, as Fives tried to protect Echo with his own body. He wasn’t going to let them take him and risk never seeing Echo alive again. It wasn’t happening. He wouldn’t leave him, he wouldn’t let anyone touch him, take him away, not again, never again, please don’t, please-
Wrecker crouched in front of them, elbows resting on his knees. He pushed his helmet up onto his head. The worry on his face made Fives pause. Wrecker’s eyes were so big, pleading, understanding.
“I won’t let anything happen to him. Promise.” Wrecker said. Fives studied Wrecker’s face. Watched his eyes for a lie. Wrecker held his hand out, palm up, as if wanting Fives to grab his hand. “No one will hurt him. Not if I’ve got him.”
For some reason sorrow broke free in Fives’ chest. No harm. Not if Wrecker had him. Not if Wrecker was charged with protecting him while he was unconscious. This guy… Fives thought he could trust him. Trust him to be the one to make sure they got out. To make sure Echo got out. As much as it made him want to cry he loosened his grip on Echo’s body. Fives nodded, once, stiff. Wrecker grimaced, understanding. When his big hands slid under Echo’s still too light body he was gentle. Gentler than he’d ever seen anyone handle somebody. Wrecker lifted Echo into his arms, careful to cradle his head so it didn’t loll backwards. Fives watched and he knew. He knew that Wrecker would never let someone fall as long as he could catch them.
