Why is that orange space-invader-y guy hiding in dinosaur skeletons, anyway?
Hi.
Seicross May 15, 1986 // Family Computer
At its core, Seicross is just another horizontal shooter, but I really enjoyed this one. For one thing, it's got a striking look and theming, as you play not as a spaceship in space or an airplane in the air, but a guy on some kind of futuristic Tron-type bike, driving through a... Cave filled with coral or something? I'm sure there's a story in the manual but I didn't bother to look. The gameplay is broadly divided into two types, a fast-paced part where you have to combat other biker dudes and can very satisfyingly ram and smash them into the scenery, and a slower-paced part that plays more like a traditional shoot-'em-up, where you have to carefully navigate around obstacles, many of which are destructible or shoot back at you.
The elephant in the room with this game is its name... It's written like that in romaji, but is apparently rendered into katakana as "sekurosu." This is a word that's used in Japanese as a slang word to mean "vigorous sexual intercourse," and while its tempting to think Seicross is just a victim of the passage of time and evolution of language, according to Game Catalog Wiki, there was at least one contemporaneous Famitsu letter making fun of the game for this, and the title is pretty much its entire legacy. Which is a shame because it's pretty fun!

Gee whiz, these space motocross cyclists today and their green laser grids and shooting beam weapons and infinite screen-width passages between rock walls.. whattayagonnado?
It's hard to do space motocross when glowing metal containers shoot fragmentary sparkle bursts in all directions :(
Dinosaur Skeletons and Artillery Emplacements.
I want to shoot lasers from my bicycle, I want to shoot lasers from my bike.
