I caught Nightborn as part of a Mystery Preview, though it was already on my watchlist anyway.

This one is honestly pretty difficult to rate. On one hand, it plays out like a painfully realistic drama about a difficult birth, isolation, exhaustion, anxiety and that overwhelming feeling of being completely on your own as a new mother.

Because the story stays so close to Saga’s perspective, the first half can be really uncomfortable to watch, especially for women or mothers who have experienced anything similar. It focuses on things that are often brushed aside or simply not talked about enough, including problems with breastfeeding, physical pain, sleep deprivation and the pressure to somehow keep functioning.

Several people actually walked out during my screening. Some of them left as early as the birth scene. 😂 I honestly cannot blame them because the film really does not hold back there.

The supernatural elements are woven into all of this very grounded trauma. Everything takes place against a beautiful Finnish forest backdrop that immediately worked for me. The isolated house, the woods and the strange connection between nature, mother and child create a genuinely unsettling atmosphere.

That is also where I wanted more. More horror, more mythology and more background about whatever was happening in those woods. The film introduces a lot of interesting ideas but never explores them deeply enough.

Seidi Haarla is excellent. She basically carries the entire film and makes Saga’s exhaustion, fear and growing desperation feel painfully real.

For me, Nightborn works much better as a drama about motherhood, isolation and emotional overload than as a straight horror film. I loved the setting, the atmosphere worked and the lead performance was extremely strong. I just wish the horror, mythology and mystery had been developed much further.
