It always goes like this. Kaz is on his phone all the time, apparently reading incredibly cool things like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein ebook, basically—though he denies it—chatting with Inej.

Jesper and Nina tease each other about everything and Colm tries to prevent those two from blowing something up. Wylan, when he is there, is next to Jesper and pays attention to the conversation, interjecting from time to time with overly shrewd comments.

I wrote another modern au one-shot about Six of Crows (the show's cancellation made me do this). Now I just have to translate it (*shivers*).

"Here we are," announces the man with him. He doesn't tell him anything else, no reassurance, no information. Like Kaz, the man also knows it wouldn't last.

"Two more years," Kaz promises himself. "Another two years, then you'll be free."

The man knocks and Kaz finds himself holding his breath.

To open is a boy with a giant smile.

"Hey, gorgeous!" he says hello. "I'm Jesper, the coolest guy for miles."

"How dare you!" a girl's voice intervenes from inside. "I'm ten times cooler than you."

He was holding out his hand. Kaz glares at him and the man next to him sighs. "He's Kaz. He has a bad character."

"Rude" says Jesper. "I'm sure he's strong. All my brothers are."

Or, Kaz arrives at a new foster home and knows it won't last. It never lasts. It doesn't matter how nice Jesper is or that he's immune to his killer stares or that he keeps calling him "brother". Or how loud and outspoken Nina is. Or how frail Matthias looks. Kaz doesn't care about any of them.
