This is a special piece. Jeff Daniel Marion and Jim Wayne Miller met in the early 70s and continued their close friendship until Miller’s death in 1996, and the two taught together in Virginia for a number of summers as well. Both are very influential poets in the region, and each of their work has influenced my own writing. This is Miller’s copy of ‘Vigils’ by Marion. Nearly every poem contains comments suggestive of a close reading by Miller. Hard to think of a more significant book to add to the shelf on these two. The inscription reads “For Jim - in appreciation of the years of friendship. Adam: “I’ve always been drawn to books with a strong sense of place. Gwendolyn Brooks is a writer and poet who grew up in Bronzeville which is where the Black Renaissance happened in the 1940s in Chicago. She writes about living there, which really was a study in contrast. There were amazing theaters and music halls, but also a lot of poverty and people living in chopped up kitchenette buildings. This book really opened up the South Side for me and led me to read a dozen of other books about Chicago. I usually have to read ten books about a place before I go visit it. That’s true for my own city, too.
