Hello, i find it so awesome that there are s o many translators out there in this fandom and others. I want to start learning japanese too so I can enjoy the games and things! How did you start to learn and do you have any tips for newbies? ;)
When I was about 10 or 12 years old, I started watching anime with my brother and my interest in Japanese grew immensely from then, sometimes I thank my brother secretly for hooking me on.
I learnt Japanese a little bit weirdly, I started off verbally talking to myself in Japanese and picked up my vocab and pronunciation from anime, especially One Piece, thank you Oda Eiichiro and Toei animation, bless you people.
I shifted my genre of anime from adventure/comdey to romance and the animes I watched I found out they were originally games and picked up my otome love from there.
After that I’ve pretty much set a plan to learn all Hiragana and Katana off by heart and learn Kanji a day or as often as I can with work and all.
How I still continue now is still a mystery to me, usually I get sick of things really quickly but once you really enjoy something, you just don’t let go of it, and my advice and tips for anyone is:
FIND SOMETHING YOU ABSOLUTELY ENJOY AND USE THAT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!
I say this because who doesn’t like having fun and learning at the same time? If you don’t then I’m sure you have your own little way of learning but this is how I got through till now.
Learning a language can be hard and easy at the same time, you just need to find what you are comfortable with and ask yourself, “are you having fun?”
SUMMARY: Sorry I’m a blabber…
My start in Japanese went from
Watching anime with brother
Mimicking words and phrases by characters on anime
Learning Hiragana and Katakana off by heart
Trying ever so hard to learn a Kanji a day or a week… (I do work…)
My advice and tips:
Learn Hiragana and Katakana, this is the start, a very GOOD start.
Don’t rush, learning a language isn’t easy, it takes time and effort to remember certain words and characters.
Find something you enjoy and use it, have some FUN!For example, learning characters and words on otome games or translating small amounts of texts with your dictionary.
Find a good translator/dictionary you are comfortable with and start maybe translating a text/script sentence by sentence.
Internet searching/Tumblr/Blogs they are all great sources of learning.
Language learning books and word cards.
Oh and here’s another similar Ask I had previously, there are some points on it as well so if you’re interested check it out! MEEP
Yep, that’s about it, sorry I blabbered on too much, I hope this is helpful Anon!
