SELFIE (2014) 1.02, “Un-Tag My Heart”
Mr. A Bit of a Poop and Ms. Most Butt
so about 2 times every year since selfie (2014) was cruelly, horribly, viciously cancelled i go down a rabbit hole of joyfully remembering it and mourning it's loss. and because i have a tumblr, i have to share my thoughts during this nostalgic cycle. continue reading at your risk.
top 3 best scenes:
1) the elevator scene. dialed the innuendo up to 11 with "i wanna give it to you tonight." henry's refusal to get a clue with what's gong on until she's taken the coat off all the way. john cho's reaction face. he was being tortured and that was chef's kiss. the exchange about henry needing to feed his cat. henry pressing that door close elevator button like he gonna die? eliza smirking? her walking away with the coat over her shoulder? 10/10 no notes.
also, i still can't believe eliza wore ANOTHER man's coat to meet her boyfriend's parents. like she's obviously obsessed with henry. imagine if freddy had asked, "hey, eliza, where'd you get that coat? looks like something higgs would wear." what could she say? "yeah, boo, i'm just wearing his coat as a dress and no underthings underneath"? who would do this with someone who's just their friend? like, yeah she took off the coat and showed henry her naked body but that means she was also WEARING the coat with very little/nothing underneath? she's so skdjfdskw
2) the waist grab scene. uhhhh, this scene had me speechless. the smolder henry gave her? she's stronger than me. i would have folded. but she ran away. and henry let her go. but whyyyyyyyy did she run away? imagine if we had gotten a kiss this episode? we need the 2 hour finale special just to see them kiss. it's cruel we never got that. this was the moment no-one could deny the chemistry. the way they were just looking at each other? it was electric (and too short).
3) when he road a dang majestic horse to say sorry! like, that was so prince charming. the eye contact, the way henry downplays his affection for her, stating their friendship and him getting a promotion are a tie. nope, sorry, dude. we know you're 100% into her. that we know later they took a selfie together with the horse? and i KNOW eliza saved that pic? it was romance at it's finest.
someone please put the hot redhead and the dude with a vest back on my screen!
I'm genuinely so upset that Selfie got cancelled, like BRO wdym I don't get to see more of Terrence's character?? Charlie?? OR ANY OF THE CHARACTERS! it genuinely needs a movie where the characters have a reunion. I'm literally on my fucking knees man! 😭😭
I was not ready for ep 10. I was not ready for the finale. WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT JUST ENDS THERE
I started watching Selfie (2014) with Karen Gillan and John Cho. It's funny and has a strong cast!
Also the 2014 aesthetics are hitting me like a punch to the face. Holy shit Eliza's outfits.
Also John Cho on a horse. Swoon ~
Things probably only I think about: as far as TV creators go, Emily Kapnek has been done dirty.
I was just talking to @theforceisstronginthegirl about this. Emily Kapnek is a TV writer and producer who you might know for creating the Nickelodeon show As Told By Ginger.
Emily Kapnek created three live-action shows for Warner Brothers that aired between 2011 and 2019 on ABC. Suburgatory with Jane Levy ran for three seasons, Selfie with Karen Gillan ran for one season, and Splitting Up Together with Jenna Fischer ran for two seasons (although that's a remake of a Danish show so she technically "developed" it). All of them were really funny, critically well received, but short-lived because not a ton of people watched them.
Except for the first season of Suburgatory, you cannot legally watch these shows ANYWHERE.
These shows were never released on DVD, aren't streaming anywhere, and cannot be purchased digitally (except for the first season of Suburgatory for some reason). They are inaccessible to the public through legal means.
I don't know what god or devil Emily Kapnek pissed off to have almost a decade of her work be wiped from legal existence, but she has been done dirty.
TL;DR - Three well loved but underwatched shows created by the same person are pretty much unavailable to watch legally & I think about it A LOT.
