I want some carnivorous plants. there are a lot more than venus fly traps. I personally want pitcher plants real bad and some pinguiculas. I wonder how telling this is of my recent mood/energy. Everything has spiritual significance. Anyway it's making me think of these songs.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the (not-even) one week progress on my alocasia polly corms?! 🪴✨

I moved these 3 corms from my prop jar into semi-hydro and I have leaves coming out on two of them!

On that note I’m going to go repot the extremely sad mother plant into semi hydro

Trying some alocasias in semi-hydro!

These are the 3 alocasia poly corms I shared from my prop jar about a month ago. Looking through the side of the jar all of the corms appear to have developed decent roots and one of them is also hitting the top of the jar.

The parent plant these corms come from is currently not a very happy camper. It’s just existing in a leafless state of dormancy. So I figured: why not throw these ones into semi hydro and see what happens.

I grow my house plants semi hydroponically, in LECA.

This type of post is lovingly called root porn in the semi hydro community. XD

This last post is just of an Alocasia Frydek and Alocasia Ivory Coast (not a pink princess, just a very juvenile plant). Both I grew from corms (bulbs), the mature Ivory Coast didn’t make it transitioning from soil to LECA, and the adult Frydek I still have and it’s happily growing in semi hydroponics too.

I put the corms into only perlite (still a semi hydro method) until they got big enough and transferred to LECA. The IC especially has *taken off*, look at all the new plants pushing out!!

These 3 beauts and cutes (Rhaphidophora decursiva, Hoya polyneura [“fishtail Hoya”], and philodendron brasil) are gonna be my next semi-hydro transition project. The LECA is soaking in Root Zone and CCS and I’ve soldered plenty of aeration holes in some to-go soup containers and an old peanut butter jar lol

Yesterday I celebrated getting my adhd meds (FiNALLY[!!]) with what I thought would be a quick stop at the local nursery but was happy it wasn’t! I got to shoot the breeze with the owner and go over my plant wishlist and figured out which plants on the list would not be a good idea for the conditions I’m willing to provide (I don’t want a humidifier and don’t care much for plants that will die with tap water). I was surprised to hear that the owner wasn’t too familiar with semi-hydro, as he preferred to grow plants in soil: the natural way (found out my SIL is the same way!). I ended up spending my last 45 minutes there talking with him about our beloved pets and then showing each other pictures of said beloved pets.

What is so great about the Semi-Hydro Lifestyle™️ is that it allows me to not worry about if I overwatered or if the plant isn’t getting enough nutrients. I can visibly see how much water the plant has and no longer have to deal with fungus gnats (hell yeah) and now I can keep plants not only alive, but also THRiViNG for longer than a month (hell fuckin’ YEAH). I also love the frugality of it (after the capital cost of the LECA and nutrient solutions). Check out the Leca Queen on youtube if you are curious about what the heck I’m talking about.

The fishtail Hoya wasn’t on my plant wishlist but I didn’t even know it existed and it looked pretty neat! I’ve already had success transitioning a different variety of Hoya (Hoya australis), so I thought I’d give it a go.

Behold: my little transition table/jungle! I’m about a month into transitioning my indoor plants to semi hydroponics: ZZ, Hoya Australis, orchid, snake plant (Zeylanica and Laurentii), Schefflera arboricola, pothos (golden and neon), monstera deliciosa, alocasia scalprum, and hopefully starting the alocasia stingray next weekend. I also have a pilea peperomiodes that I accidentally decapitated when trying to get some lower leaf cuttings… it’s sitting in a rooting nutrient solution with an air stone and already has some roots! Once they get longer/develop secondary roots I’ll plop it in some LECA. It has been so satisfying watching the fuzzy new roots develop :D I’m not confident that the Hoya is going to make it but it was a freebie that came along with some wall-mounted planters I found on Craigslist so I will try not to be too upset if it doesn’t work out. It feels good to have a new hobby
