Hi! How would you think I should write my LGBTQ+friendly (medieval fantasy) society (like without homophobia, transphobia, etc.)?
This is a very broad question and goes into different aspect of worldbuilding that would take a lot to go into, so please keep in mind this advice isn’t comprehensive by any means. This is just some stuff to jump off with.
I would first assume no default orientations and genders for anyone. Cissexism and heterosexism wouldn’t exist. Intersex people would be treated as normal, regardless of gender identity. You don’t have to go into comprehensive detail for everyone’s bodies and preferences or anything - just have those things treated with complete normalcy. Acknowledge things like, “oh she has a wife” or whatever as just a regular thing.
Shows like She-Ra do a LGBTQ+ friendly world really well. Characters who aren’t straight are just acknowledged to not be straight without question.
I’d also want to consider how labels work in your world. This old ask should help you with that.
I would explore every aspect of the world socially, as well as the systems present in the world like magic, science. How do these things work for LGBTQ+ people in a way that acknowledges us as normal, and not exceptions to the norm?
This is our fantasy tag, which should help explore some of the nuances and common concerns within the genre.
