Can you apply ray tracing to character models as well? I'd be interested to see what characters like Kernel look like.
I’m not actually using any ray tracing in my screenshots. Aside from forcing anti-aliasing in the Nvidia control panel and rendering the game at a huge resolution, all the lighting and whatnot you see is 100% stock.
That being said, I’d love to see what it looks like too. Neat thing I found running round with the LOL and a gold Triangulate is how the reflection effect for the Intrusion Countermeasure Programs is done;
The reflection is actually just the textures of the ICP themselves! Normally you wouldn’t see this, since at reasonable resolutions each bit of the image takes up a larger area on the model and is distorted by the various curves and whatnot. When the game is rendered at 4k, though, it becomes plainly visible.
TronFAQ’s experiments with using a raytracing shader really highlight to me that this game could be perfect for showcasing how great raytraced reflections and global illumination could be. If it were possible to mod this to use raytracing for the reflections on the model, it’d be very interesting to see just how different things would look. That’s far, far beyond my capabilities, though.
