When someone tells you you could have died, you start to look at life a little differently.

This summer I almost died from septicaemia. Mom found me unable to move and non-responsive. I remember very little before I got to the hospital. What I do remember is the surgeon had to insert a central venous line. That meant threading a venous catheter through a vein via an incision in my neck. I was awake for the procedure. I was covered from the head down by a heavy plastic sheet like a dropcloth. I felt like I was suffocating even though I was reassured several times that I wouldn’t. I spent, I think, a week in the hospital.
