I want a Sonic 2020 sequel to be simple
I see a lotta folks theorizing about all the fantasy elements that could be expanded on in a Sonic sequel and that’s great. I myself wouldn’t want them to be absent from it, of course, but I would not want them to come at the expense of the quieter, domestic moments that made this first movie so charming to begin with. I want Sonic to adjust to having friends and people in his life after 10 years antisocial self-imposed isolation and loneliness. I want Sonic to experience being a kid for the first time with other kids to share his childhood with. I want Sonic to go to school, to make human friends, probably outcasts. To deal with bullies, with his short attention span making studying hard, with teachers and holidays and recess and peer pressure.
I understand wanting to see your fave chars from Sonic lore make an appearance and be involved, but what I really don’t want is for the plot to be bloated with too much fantasy and magic and superpowered gems- I don’t want complicated politics and inter-character relations- I don’t want this to turn into a Ken Penders script is all. So introduce Tails, maybe introduce Knuckles if you must, but try to keep it simple, that’s what I want.
The magic and superpowers and a possible return of Robotnik would be okay to include, but only as a means of accentuating the stakes, you need to spend a LOT of time making the new life Sonic has built something worth fighting for. I know it sounds kinda lame and cliche to send our cartoon fish-out-of-water protagonist to school and to deal with boring domestic stuff, but if done right it could be great.
