Common answers range from heights to public speaking. Or childhood fears of the dark and spiders that follow into adulthood. Then there are those that go quiet at the question who know that no one will believe what they’re truly scared of.
How are they supposed to explain encounters they’ve had with man-eating monsters seeming to be made from darkness itself? Mannequins that resemble their disappearing coworkers? Accounts that had them laughed out of police stations or had friends questioning their sanity.
When they start to lose hope of being believed, they find themselves stumbling across this strange institution. Did someone recommend they come? How did they get here? Regardless of the unanswered questions, soon enough they find themselves standing in front of a smiling receptionist who greets them with a, "Hello! Are you here to file a report?"
Located in the quaint town of Duskview, Massachusetts, the Ambrose Association was created in 1844 by its esteemed founder Jacob Ambrose and is considered the laughingstock among the academic community. While its peers research practical subjects like science or medicine, the association is known for opening its doors to those who have experienced… The unexplainable.
On the outside, it appears to be like any other academic research facility. Specializing in myths, legends, and the paranormal. Though many within its walls know that the reports they receive are far from fiction.
Employees working in the library and intake may still hold a healthy amount of skepticism that the work they are doing is legitimate, but others in extraction and research know just how real the threats humanity faces are. And who knows what workers in the mysterious underground archives have going on. Some associates may find themselves compelled to accept a position with ulterior motives. To find an explanation for their own secret encounters that have left them scarred.

With such a well-known father, Alyse has always been in the spotlight more than they would like. Because they were such a shy child, always at their father’s side, they earned the title of Wallace’s most darling child. Although they got the most attention, Alyse doesn’t think Alistair or Cilla ever minded. They understood Alyse and Wallace had a different connection: not better, just different. It only got stronger after that night Alyse and Alistair accompanied their mother home. Whitney wanted to avoid the Crimson King’s knights, so they took a short detour through Tulgey to get home. Alyse has become more of a homebody since, indulging herself in stories of fantasy, magic, and romance to forget the things they saw that night.
The White Rabbit: Alyse has always felt closest to their father. While some might see Wallace as a coward, Alyse sees their father as a hero. Wallace might not be the most courageous, but they still fought beside Alice when the time came and they have done everything since to protect their children from any harm that might come to them. Although Alyse does feel bad to some degree about the origin of their present title, they couldn’t be prouder of the man that it represents.
The Rabbit’s Pride: Sharing the terrible experience that they did, Alyse and Alistair have had a special connection growing up. They understand and respect one another’s fears in a way that others, including Cilla, often do not. They also share in one another’s comfort. Alyse will tell Alistair all about her stories, and Alistair will tell Alyse about his research. They are very opposite means of consolation, but they bear each other’s just the same.
The Rabbit’s Rebel: Alyse and Cilla were so close as children, and Alyse adored their sibling in every way. Cilla was Alyse’s guardian, always there to tell off those who sought to hurt her, and Cilla was everything Alyse aspired to be. After their mother’s death, though, Alyse sunk into her stories and Cilla seemed to fade away into something else. Cilla became more reckless, insensitive, and pessimistic. It began to be painful for Alyse to be around her, since their heart yearned for the opposite. Alyse hopes that their sibling will come to their senses, but they just aren’t sure how to help them back.

Once upon a time, there were two rabbits and their triplets. As Alyse remembered it, there was a time when the five of them were so happy, when there was love abounding, when everything in Wonderland seemed wonderful. Through the eyes of the little girl, nothing was wrong- nothing could be wrong. She had her father, who in her eyes was like a white knight or a noble hero, fixing little scrapes on her knees and scooping her up and sitting her on his shoulders. She had a mother who told her the best stories in the world and who little Alyse swore had sunshine in her smile. She had a sister who was brave and funny and a brother who was warm and would listen to her silly stories about flying mice and whatever else popped into her head. In essence, they were a family out of one of the storybooks Alyse loved so very much. The littlest rabbit swore that it would always stay that way, like an eternal and glorious summer day. What she had yet to learn was that in every life, in every story, winter always comes.
The evening Whitney White died wasn’t entirely clear in her memory. They’d been so very little still… she and Alistair were headed home with their mother, and their mother had wanted to avoid the Crimson King’s knights. Tulgey was a shortcut. But it was so dark… What happened next was seared into Alyse’s memory. In the darkness of the woods, she’d heard a snarl that would haunt her nightmares for the rest of her life. A pair of gleaming red eyes stared out at the three of them. And then all hell broke loose. Her brother was the one who protected her while chaos roared around them that fateful evening. He held her tight, he pulled her away and hid her face from the horror unfolding in front of them. But nothing stopped her from hearing every awful second of their mother’s death. What was worst of all was the eerie silence that followed it before they fled the woods.
The hours, days, weeks, even months following that moment were one long blur. Something in her broke that day. The experience in the woods had scarred the young woman in ways that could never quite fully be mended. Alyse grew timid and nervous, preferring to hide from the monsters of the world outside and throwing herself into her books and stories, reading and writing her way into far away worlds. When she did leave the farm in Harmony Grove, she always seemed skittish and anxious, always looking around for something to pop out of the shadows and snatch her up. Her heart is truly one of gold, but most people see the flighty, wide eyed young woman and not the kind soul hiding behind the fear.
As for the state of Wonderland and the monarchy, Alyse White is quite undecided and not very involved. Perhaps it’s because she’d been so sheltered and protected since the death of her mother. Perhaps it’s because she’s been hiding away in her own little world more often than not. Whatever it was, she always seemed to duck her head and hide away wherever the Crimson King and his knights were involved.

Dropped on the Mad Hatter’s doorstep when he was a child, the Apprentice always struggled with their identity. They didn’t know their past, their future was uncertain, and their present hardly made any sense. The Hatter raised them like their own, teaching them their trade, but just over ten years ago they disappeared. The last the Apprentice remembers, the Hatter was raving about how the Crimson King was going to be after them, but the Hatter never explained why. Suddenly the Hatter was gone, and their Apprentice still had no idea how to finish a hat. Scarves, they could do, though, and so you can thank the Apprentice for continuing to make Wonderland fashionable. Since their reputation as a Scarf Maker never caught on for a better title, they are still always known for their relation to the Mad Hatter. Although the rest of Wonderland thinks the two were close, the Apprentice hasn’t heard from their mentor since the day they left.
The Schoolteacher: Not really having a family growing up, the Apprentice didn’t know how to relate to others for a while. After all, the Mad Hatter was their only influence for a long time. The Schoolteacher reached out to them as a friend, giving them advice on how to act in public and how to deal with the Hatter’s madness. The Schoolteacher was always so intelligent, no matter what it came to, and the Apprentice began to rely on them like an older sibling. Nowadays, all the Apprentice has is their friends, so they are trying to hold on even when the doubts creep in and they wonder who else might leave them, too.
The Aggravated Artist: The Artist and Apprentice can relate on their array of identity issues and creative outlets. They didn’t start out as friends but more as drinking buddies with a dose of group therapy. That turned into artistic companions, leaning on one another for creative input since no one else was particularly refined enough. It’s an odd friendship, but it works.
The Messenger: The Apprentice has known the Messenger for a long time. The two grew up not too far from one another, but they were never particularly close. It wasn’t until recently that the Apprentice noticed them beginning to act somewhat suspiciously when they were beginning their work day. The Apprentice once caught sight of them speaking with a dark figure they suspect might have been the Welcomer. The Apprentice doesn’t know for certain if the Messenger is working for the rebellion, but if they are, the Apprentice worries for them. They know, after all, the danger of the Crimson King setting their sights on you.

Much has changed since Alice’s last visit. She since married, in her own world, and had two curious children, while a terrible King rose to power in this realm. Of course, all of this terror was bound to spill out, as the King could not allow the possibility of some pompous little girl to end him as she did prior ruling parties.
Alice is dead.
New threats continue to arise in every corner of Wonderland and there is no Alice to save them now. Then again, does a world as mad as this one deserve any more saving?

Ernest Brannan is a 46 year old Wanderer who looks like David Tennant. He is currently open.
Background:
Ernest Brannan was born with a mind that most would have strong feelings for, whether it be of annoyance or admiration. From a young age, he did everything he possibly could to understand how things worked, tearing apart toys and phones and putting them back together. He was a prodigy, really, and he’d be proud to tell you if you didn’t already know. It isn’t that he’s an arrogant man but he knows what he’s good at and, outside of sciences, there isn’t much else…
He was becoming known around London for his more peculiar inventions, such as the mechanical bird messenger and the perfect popcorn popper when he met Alice Kingsley, famed children’s author and… beautiful young woman. But her physical appearance could not be compared with the beauty of her mind. she loved every one of his bizarre ideas, and she had quite a few of her own. Every sentence out of her mouth was strange and unusual, and often nonsensical, and he absolutely loved it! Now he wishes he had never left her, even for a second. They had been married, had two beautiful children and a highly intelligent house cat, and all was absolutely perfect. If he hadn’t gone to propose some of his foolish ideas to some American businessmen, perhaps he could have stopped what happened…
She was murdered in her bed, with the children just a shout away. He will never forgive himself for that. With his children disappearing just last year and his niece soon after, he did everything in his power to find them. He would not forgive himself if he lost them, too. He set his inventions aside and nearly went insane in the long year that it took to find them. He searched everywhere for a clue as to where they could have gone, but he had to go just crazy enough to realize what was right in front of him. His niece Delilah had been pouring over Alice’s books before she disappeared. There were no other possibilities. Only impossibilities. If anyone could find a portal to Wonderland, Ernest Brannan could.
When he arrived, however, it was not such a happy reunion. Thea had gone and gotten a king murdered, Delilah had been traumatized by Tulgey, Whiskey the cat turned out to be half human, and Willem had gone mad with rage. He feared he knew no way to fix them, not that Whiskey was broken, and they would not return home with him. But he realized quickly that they hardly had a home to return to. So he decided to make on in Wonderland. Alice may have wanted that as well if she were still with them. He began to work for the people of Wonderland and use his inventions to bring technology to this magical realm. He created several dams in the Restless River to make hydroelectricity practically common place in the last two years. He created a more complex plumbing system, took some responsibility away from fireplaces with electric stoves and heating… He also helped Wonderland discover film photography and an old-fashioned, wire telephone system.
Ernest became a hit and has even worked with the new king to help advance Wonderland now that Wanderers are not to be persecuted. Having never seen the man that killed his wife, he is unaware that he has become friendly with her murderer. He has not told anyone about his connection to Alice, either. He knows it will only bring too much attention to her demise and he is so tired of reliving the most horrible days of his life after her death. Somehow, though, he has found himself becoming nearly… happy. Although Willem has gone off on his own, he has convinced Thea and Delilah to move in with him so he can make sure they are safe, and Thea has been a great deal of help to him in his inventions. Delilah he still holds some concern for… She has always been a quiet girl, but nowadays her silence seems fearful.
