@abbys-peach-boy and of course Oliver knows Elio so well by this point that he welcomes the attempt to kill any last bit of shame. No doubt we didn’t need this. I keep forgetting about it bc I want to, lol. But I understand what Aciman was going for here and it really just drove the point home that Oliver and Elio are one and the same. Little peaches that don’t want to blush with shame, yet. As Mafalda would say.

I think for Elio, once he realized that shame was something that kept creating a distance between him and Oliver, he decided to be done with shame. He felt it after the first time they slept together and even after Oliver quieted the shame, when Elio was alone with his thoughts it would creep back. He wouldn’t be able to shake it until he confronted it so he did the most confrontational thing he could think of and invited something that was undeniably shameful to happen. @abbys-peach-boy
