Another update on the oval serving board with the split purpleheart. I did a quick sanding job on the OSS/belt sander and the horizontal spline is looking like a great fit. Still some fine sanding to go, but I'm liking how this is looking and even more so that the split seems to be contained. I had made these two boards with red oak prior to learning of its less than desirable characteristics for food prep surfaces. So I'm turning them into (dry use) serving boards with a different shape. Here's my quick method for tracing ellipses. We were out late lastnight and I'm too tired to do math, so a quick trial and error string and guide block did the trick. The wood block is temporarily affixed with some double sided tape. The next step is cutting it close to the line on the bandsaw, then onto the disc sander for the bulk of the shaping. Then onto the @ridgidpowertools OSS/belt sander for the final edge. After I'm done shaping the edges, I'll drill a thumb hole at one end and give all the edges a roundover to match the smooth curves of the ellipse. Quick update on the oval serving board. It's out of the clamps and the horizontal oak spline is looking pretty good. Hopefully this will keep the split in the Purple Heart in check. I need to sand down some scrap purpleheart and mix up a bit of purple paste to seal over the split on the face. Edges shaped, hiked drilled and I went with a 5/16 roundover, just seemed to be a good fit.
