#naptimedovetails from yesterday. I used a 3mm chisel to clear out the leftover waste from the tails after the coping saw. With that size I can lean on the soft wood and chisel without needing a mallet (and risk waking the kid). I did the scoring trick and chiseled out a bit with a 1/4” chisel up to the line first to set the baseline. Then chiseled the waste from inside the tails. Since this is cedar, it’s not going great. Way too soft with lots of tearout. But the technique is still good to practice. I’m also trying out adding a shoulder to the underside of the tails to make alignment and marking the pins easier. Seems to work pretty well. Also, I know this tail ratio is for hardwoods. I did some woodworking! Made a quick riser/monitor/laptop stand for my freshly assembled standing desk. Only took me a year to get to it! It’s definitely nothing special. Actually it’s pretty awful. I got in the shop this week for a quick minute so I finally finished a “quick” project I started last fall. After 9 years in the weather, the wooden handles on the pooper scooper disintegrated. Rather than pay the whopping $35 for a new one, I convinced my wife that I could simply replace the handles on this one since the rake and scoop were in good shape. For a total of like $7 and 10 months later, here it is. Since my nephew is interested in wand carving, I figured I ought to give it a try too so I can provide some advice if asked. It’s fun! I’m working on a basilisk themed death eater wand in pine with a mora 106 (recommended by @laughingmantisstudio it’s a great knife!) Looking pretty good so far, I think. Once I have everything roughed out, I’ll need to use some gouges to do a little detail work. Too dangerous for my untrained hands and a sharp knife 😬 This was all done during an exceptionally long nap. I’m not much of an electrician, but I’ve had a lot of practice mending extension cords. It seems every time I trim the hedges, I get more practice splicing wires. I should probably look into a cordless system 😂 This thing had been sitting on my workbench since I cut it this past spring. I finally got around to mending it during an hour long nap. Hello! My daughter has been keeping me out of the shop, but I figured I’d pop in to say hi and let you all know I’m still alive. While I’ve made no progress on any of the “fun” projects I’m in the middle of, I have done a bunch of home repair and diy to get the former rental out of my hair. Fingers crossed, we should be closing soon 🤞🏻 Also, my nephew hit a milestone birthday and was accepted to Hogwarts. 🧙‍♂️ He’s shown an interest in wand carving, so for his birthday, I’ve put together a carving kit with an assortment of magical woods. Yellow pine, basswood, cedar, fir, poplar, walnut, cherry and maple. All nice straight grain. I’ve also printed out a Janka scale to give a bit of background on the hardness of each species. The only one I’m not wild about including is the fir. It’s a medium softish density, but has a much wider grain than all the others. The only reason I’m including it is because I had some scraps in the shop and it’s included on the list of magical woods. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Anyone ever carve fir? Is it any good or more hassle than it’s worth for a beginner? I know it’s awful for kumiko 🙄 Speaking of kumiko, the basswood block I bought happened to be 8/4x12”x8” so I plan to make use of that once I have some nap times longer than 20 minutes. Not as professional looking as a @skanwoods #flatlayfriday, but here’s my in-progress restoration of a Stanley No. 78 rabbet plane. No idea if these parts are all stock, but it seems the necessary bits are all present. Should make a nice user. Here the parts are all out of the rust bath and rinsed off. I don’t have a wood stove, so they’re sitting on my electric space heater to dessicate any remaining moisture before I do some more brush work and then epoxy paint. The blade is on great shape aside from the two big chips in the cutting edge. Got a few minutes in the shop today, so I tuned up the spoke shave to clean up the live edges of these soon to be spalted maple charcuterie boards. My spoke shave is a cheap Stanley and it’s really finicky to adjust, but once it’s dialed in, it’s the perfect tool for a job like this. I had previously de-barked these slabs with a draw knife. Got a few minutes in the shop today. After a thorough vacuuming, I took apart sharpened and readjusted the No4. I’ve been frustrated with thick, uneven shavings forever with this thing. The blade was sharp and square so I couldn’t figure out what was wrong for a while. Turns out, the frog was to blame. It was out of square and positioned way back (btw, the frogs on the no 4 are adjustable). After knocking down the machine planed surface on this hard maple, I’m getting ghost thin shavings and it’s leaving a glass surface. Finally feel like I’m making progress with hand tool skills and setup. I also disassembled and started to de rust thus old Stanley no 78 rabbet plane. I had previously flattened the base and sharpened the blade for a quick job, but it needs the full TLC treatment.
