Since my nephew is interested in wand carving, I figured I ought to give it a try too so I can provide some advice if asked. It’s fun! I’m working on a basilisk themed death eater wand in pine with a mora 106 (recommended by @laughingmantisstudio it’s a great knife!) Looking pretty good so far, I think. Once I have everything roughed out, I’ll need to use some gouges to do a little detail work. Too dangerous for my untrained hands and a sharp knife 😬 This was all done during an exceptionally long nap. Got a few minutes in the shop today, so I tuned up the spoke shave to clean up the live edges of these soon to be spalted maple charcuterie boards. My spoke shave is a cheap Stanley and it’s really finicky to adjust, but once it’s dialed in, it’s the perfect tool for a job like this. I had previously de-barked these slabs with a draw knife. Not as professional looking as a @skanwoods #flatlayfriday, but here’s my in-progress restoration of a Stanley No. 78 rabbet plane. No idea if these parts are all stock, but it seems the necessary bits are all present. Should make a nice user. Here the parts are all out of the rust bath and rinsed off. I don’t have a wood stove, so they’re sitting on my electric space heater to dessicate any remaining moisture before I do some more brush work and then epoxy paint. The blade is on great shape aside from the two big chips in the cutting edge. The first of the four fir fumiko- er, I mean Kumiko panels is complete. Since fir was the worst choice of woods ever to use on a kumiko panel, it’ll require a bit of touch up work, but overall I’m pretty happy with it. Made a bit of progress on the fir asanoha kumiko panels. Halfway done with the hinges. Next comes the 1/3 corner shave and then fitting the locks. Took a quick break at lunch to try out my first premium, newly purchased, fine woodworking tool. This is a @veritas_woodworking apron plane and I’m pretty sure I love it. I got the upgraded PM-V11 plane iron (for an extra $5, how could I not?). I haven’t put a finished edge on it yet, but it’s pretty seriously sharp right out of the box. Slightly longer than I anticipated but still fits my hand well. Cuts like butter on the kumiko jig, which is where I envisioned getting a lot of use from this tool, besides the usual low angle cutting tasks. I now have nice Narex chisels and even nicer Stanley sweetheart chisels, but chose to use fir on a bunch of asanoha patterns and lack the skill to finish them properly with an open blade. Tonight I finished the @bikecitywoodworks kumiko kit. I am happy with my work. Pretty good for a first attempt, I think. This was a great little exercise in mindfulness, precision and repetition and I’d suggest it to any woodworker who would like a side project or something to slow down and unwind with. With the kit, all you need is a sharp chisel and you’re ready to go. I think the two key points that make this look nice were 1) a razor sharp chisel for every cut, honing in between. And 2, taking it slow. You could knock this thing out in an hour, but that wasn’t the point for me. Since I haven’t been able to get to the bigger stuff I had to put on hold, this was a great way to get into the shop for just a few minutes at a time, make a little progress and feel encouraged for the next step.
