The Chinese government must address the underlying causes of protests that have led eleven Tibetans to set themselves on fire since March, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said today.

The Tibetans had set themselves on fire in protest against restrictions on basic freedoms on certain monasteries in the area and also because of the lack of security in the area. In response to these protests, the Chinese government have resorted to heavy handed tactics, mass arrests, imprisonments and possible killings. 

On Monday the Dalai Lama, speaking in Japan, said: "Some kind of cultural genocide is taking place... that is why you see these sorts of sad incidents happen, due to the desperateness of the situation."
