"An Indifferent god observes the world through a pinhole and makes sense of what it sees" [Iron Lung spoilers]
(to be corrected once the digital release drops, that's how I remember it)
Recently I was thinking about the meaning of this exchange, also "The light thinks ant therefore we are" and remembered another quote that I found relevant: "People can only meet you as deeply as they have met themselves".
We are all interpreting what we experienced through our own prisms, angles and lenses. I am currently writing a longer article where I draw lines between Iron Lung and Seveneves, Oblivion (movie), Firewatch, The Locked Tomb series, Disco fucking Elysium, and more, because those are all works that left a strong impression on me. Strong enough that I could recognise reflections of the media I loved in Iron Lung.
I thrive seeing people share their interpretations also, that Laika homage?? My heart!! I love reading how Iron Lung inspired someone to share what resonates with them. Writing, art, cosplay, every little thing is a love song.
Might be just my internet bubble, but media felt rather shallow recently. I don't go to cinema often, I don't watch a lot of reels, long-format youtube essays are my current go-to leisure watch. I can't remember being this excited about a movie (Godzilla Minus One was the one before this, I think) and Iron Lung leaving so much for interpretation and discussion is such a delicious breath of fresh air (pun not intended) for a starved mind. I love the wild goose chase we've all collectively gone on. Mark and the team achieved something beautiful and I am glad to be in this moment in time when it happened.
I will keep writing snippets to see if anyone else feels and thinks the same, thanks for tagging along!
