watching severance for the first time and I was spoiled for certain things but not the alt history/religion stuff. I LOVE it. extremely elysium-core. i love how the Kier stuff is so grounded in history it really feels like one of those titans of industry successfully started a closed community and instead of imploding the way they did in real life they really took the fuck off

Everyone rooting for old man polyamory, I see you, you're so valid but sorry I'm rooting for affair and/or divorce so bad, I want the love that was born between people who existed for nothing but work, who never saw the sky, who weren't even really people, to win, I want that love to far outshine anything 'real' people could manage, I want it to be inescapable, inevitable, and ruinous

had a great time with episode 2.1 of Severance, but I'm running into the same problem I had with season 1, which is that Helly's relationship with her outie makes her by far the most interesting member of the Macrodata team, and yet requires that we spend less time in her POV in order to preserve the mystery.

like, Helena impersonating Helly is a great twist, but it means once again our protagonist is Mark, The Beigeist Man On The Planet. this is not a complaint about Adam Scott, who is doing a perfect job, Mark is supposed to be The Beigeist Man On The Planet, and maybe it would be more compelling if we didn't constantly get stories where we were supposed to care about Beige Men and not the much more interesting women relegated to supporting roles.

I dunno, I never quite got over my feeling of being bait-and-switched when the series started from Helly's POV and then switched to Mark's.

Patricia Arquette is just killing it as Cobel, I love her. She’s so frightening and inappropriate. She’s an abusive boss and hits these toxic mother notes in her relationship with Mark. I can’t wait to find out what’s wrong with her. Absolute FREAK. The kind of evil girlboss character I’ve been craving. Really love the reveal that creeping on him isn’t even part of her job she’s just recreationally insane about him.

especially like how severance doesn’t let the audience feel good about Milchik being kind to the Innies. every kindness is presented alongside with horrible breaches of autonomy, sexual violence, or torture by the company to remind the viewer that it doesn’t matter if Milchik is nice to the company slaves, they’re still slaves.

everything about Milchik's characterization is so good. he’s really endearing at times. he’s an average chipper middle manager dude. his job also involves torture. what is he supposed to do? not do his job??

he wants to make the severance system kinder, he clearly feels very strongly about that
