Recently a friend asked me if I could alter a pair of jeans into jorts based on this Youtube short by creator wandythemaker. I’d like to share my process of doing this without a serger :D

The actual alteration Wandythemaker makes is inserting godets in the jeans existing side seams, and one continuous godet gusset within the inseam. When used in skirts, dresses, sleeves etc. godets create more “bountiful” volume, but in this case the panels are simply neutralizing any negative ease in the jeans. At least, in my version that’s the case, as the desired length was shorter in the tutorial. The shorter something is the more conservative I think you should be when it comes to adding volume :p

The key to achieving this without a serger (as in, how to finish the seams which allows it to be washable) is utilizing flat felled seams. This was also the first time I tried flat felled seams…and it was so easy I’m happy I did. The version I utilized the 1/2” seam allowance in the original tutorial, HEAVILY GUIDED by this Youtube tutorial by Kimberly Airwin. Otherwise I believe it would’ve been impossible.

^In order to neatly tackle the triangular nature of the outer godets’ seams, I sewed each “leg” of the triangle independently. Both starting at the bottom, ending at the top, and slightly overlapping whichever seam is last. Sort of following the same logic as finishing a godet panel using French seams (by NotchesSewing). I know not everyone likes French seams, but when you’re like me…a serger-less woman…you get over it quickly.

^For the gusset panel, I sewed the 2 mirrored panels together like instructed, but finished them flat-felled. It wasn’t until I got to this piece when I realized how unique of a problem sewing the second seam was going to be. Even with free-arm (which I don’t have to begin with), sewing inside the pants is a mindfuck. In order to tackle this, I started each seam line at the hem, and stopped at the middle. Stitch to middle, back stitch-cut threads. Spin so you’re working on the other end of the seam (the opposite leg), stitch to middle, back stitch-cut. When researching different methods, a phrase I saw more than once was “sewing in the basket method”. The only issue that arises with the flat-felled seam is how chonky those 2 seam intersections are, but I sewed slowly and after the fact used Fraycheck on all the load bearing start-stops.

^My final task was ultra double stitching over the tops of the outer godets, and securing ALL the seams at the hem by stitching squares. Apparently it fits perfectly! I’m really pleased with how it ended up, too :)

Spring/summer sewing photo dump!

- rayon tea house top (not sure about this top yet. Every time I wear it, I feel like I’m wearing a maternity top. But then other times I kinda don’t mind it!)

- bamboo union st tee (love love love this shirt. The fabric is a little heavy but not too heavy for summer. I finally modified the patter to fit me the way I like)

- rayon jersey flutter wrap dress (on the draperier side but I love this dress. I want to make this in a crushed velvet and/or a heavier knit, maybe a tie died one!?)

- denim Cleo pinafore (haven’t worn this since I finished it. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but I guessing since it hasn’t been worn I won’t wear it anytime soon)

- linen fiore skirt (I made this during a rough/scary/anxiety driven knit and it kept me distracted enough to make it through. I love this skirt, the only thing that might bug me later is the color; that’s fine since dye exists!)

- dyed rayon suki robe (I made this out of a very lightweight sorta cheap white rayon. The final product reminded me of 1-ply toliet paper. I crumple dyed it with coral rit dye. The final dye looks really pretty but I’m still iffy on the garment/pattern.)

I haven’t prewashed them yet but oh my does the bamboo jersey feel wonderful! Slightly disappointed that the modal doesn’t feel as wonderful but it still feels better than rayon jersey.
