Jacquardvävd Våffelbindning (Waffle Weave on Jacquard Loom), Matilda Dominique, 2014
"A weave is both a simple and an extremely complex construction. When the structure of the weave is enlarged, both of these aspects become clear. The simplicity and obvious grid around which all woven patterns are built up becomes extra visible in the waffle weave structure. This weave technique also creates a complex three-dimensional structure. My ambition with this work is partly to challenge the limits of what is technically possible to weave before the three-dimensional form collapses, and partly to illustrate the paradox that is embodied in the weave. 'Waffle Weave on Jacquard Loom' is a study of a specific weave technique and how its three-dimensional form is influenced by being enlarged, as well as by how the material acts when its structure and scale are altered."
Thanks to Ung Svensk Form (Young Swedish Design) for nominating my work! The weaving will be shown in a touring exhibition together with works by 21 other amazingly talented young designers over the next year and a half in Sweden and abroad. First show was at Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair, and this Friday the exhibition opens at ArkDes in Stockholm. The exhibition will also travel to Gothenburg and Malmö, and after that the tour will continue abroad (we hope).
The catalogue for the exhibition can be downloaded here.
