Happy to join Persatuan Bawean Singapura (PBS) for the launch of their book, “Ponthuk Bawean Di Singapura”. “Ponthuk” talks about how the Bawean community came as immigrants from Bawean Island in East Java to Singapore in the 19th century. It also describes the life of these early migrants and how they helped one another assimilate into life here through a strong sense of community living. There are currently at least 58,000 Baweanese living in Singapore, making them the second-largest Malay sub-ethnic group after the Javanese. Ok looking through my ten thousand and more photos of last year's Singapore Heritage Fest, I came across the final weekend at Pulau Ubin where one of the highlights was movies on the old stage where every year, the opera troupes play to the special guests. One of the movie's shown was "Homecoming", directed by He Shuming, with Royston Tan @filmr as Creative Director . HOMECOMING is loving tribute to Pulau Ubin, where eight, past and present, residents, grapple with the acts of leaving and returning the island, where they call home. The film was commissioned by the National Museum of Singapore for Singapore Heritage Festival 2016.
