they may have called the episode "the world inverted" but I don't believe any of the core characters are different people than in the canon universe, it's only their experiences that have changed them.

and it makes me cry even more over magnus because it goes to show what happens to him without magic in the long term. yes, he comes to terms with it and manages to live a good life. but he's gone dormant every bit as much as his magic has.

he's living but he's not truly alive.

iris likened magic to a soul and you can see its loss in magnus. I fully believe that before the demons were locked away au magnus was basically a carbon copy of his canon counterpart. I don't think his magic going dormant was quite the same as canon magnus because you can see he still has it when clary shows up, it's just faded so much he can't use it. I imagine he lost it little by little, and adjusted himself and his life accordingly until one day he woke up and could barely remember what a life with magic was like.

in summary, this isn't an au where magnus is shy and reserved and dresses to avoid notice. it's an au where magnus has lost his soul but the world still turns
