[deep sigh] I have to post an assignment on social media as part of the grade, but the problem is tumblr is my only social media. not kidding. It’s for my Arabic class, so it’s technically on point for this blog, but I’m nervous about posting my face. If I do it face-less (voice over) and post it here, will y’all interact with it/reblog it so I can turn in the notes at the end of the semester?

Levantine Arabic Concepts #1: يعطيك العافية

Phrases

masculine listener:  يعطيك العافية

feminine listener:  يعطيكِ العافية

plural listeners:  يعطيكم\يعطيكن العافية

Note 1: The difference between masculine and feminine is in the kasra short vowel at the end of the first word!

Note 2: From what I remember my professor saying, the difference between the ending for plural listeners has to do with regions of the Levant; I believe she distinguished that Palestine and Jordan tend to use -kum (كم) more, whereas Syria and Lebanon use -kun (كن) more.

Meaning

“May G-d grant you health/strength.”

Usage

Note that these all have to do with work/tasks.

Said as a greeting in the workplace.

Said in appreciation when someone completes a task, especially for you.

Said in greeting to someone in your household who has returned home from work.

Said as a polite way to get someone to stop their task. The classroom example was notifying a taxi driver that you’ve arrived at your destination and they can stop the vehicle.

Hmmm Shaami is Shelinda’s predecessor of state sponsored news?

Yes. I gave Shaami a more distinctive (and annoying) personality while borrowing her as my “roving reporter” avatar to collect interesting NPC quotes, but she’s an actual NPC reporter in Final Fantasy X.

“Maester Mika’s ship is here!” First glimpse of Shaami (or a lookalike):

*runs by, presumably to grab her cameraman*

Later, when Tidus and Yuna go out looking for Sir Auron, Shaami apparently corners Yuna for her broadcast. This cutscene doesn’t let us hear what Shaami is saying, but you get a good glimpse of her odd sphere-water microphone which Shelinda uses in FFX-2…

“Wow, you’re really famous!” Tidus says to Yuna at the end of this scene.

After that, Shaami and her cameraman are always in the middle of the causeway in Luca. You can recruit Shaami as a free agent blitzball player, which is how I know her name.

Youtube bloggers don’t often bother to cap NPCs, but Shaami’s got different things to say at different times. *pulls up my transcript*

Prior to the blitzball tournament:

Shaami: I am reporting to you live, from outside Luca Stadium. The excitement here has reached a feverish pitch as the opening ceremony gets under way…H-Hey! I’m in the middle of a broadcast! Leave me alone! ¬Hm? You want me to interview you? It’s not like the Aurochs are going to make it past the first round anyway. Why bother with an interview when we already know the outcome? ¬Well… if you win at least one game, I’ll grant you an interview.

After the tournament:

Shaami: Do you know anything about the fiends inside the stadium? We have so few facts, we can’t write up a feature on it yet. ¬I’ve been interviewing eyewitnesses, but nobody seems to know a thing.

If the Aurochs won, she adds: Oh yes, congratulations! I have a lot more respect for the Aurochs now.

After Operation Mi’ihen:

Shaami: As you all know, Operation Mi'ihen ended in utter failure. With the Crusaders annihilated, the warrior monks and the Guado have been assigned to take up security posts in various locales. This dispatch was ordered by Maester Kinoc and Maester Seymour as they… H-Hey! Would you stop interrupting my broadcast? You get enough attention already! ¬The mysterious disappearance of the summoners may somehow be connected to the Al Bhe… Ahh! Just let me do my job!

That remains her dialogue until you reach Macalania Temple, after which you can’t backtrack south past the Thunder Plains (because Guadosalam’s blocking the way) until you reacquire the airship.

Post-Zanarkand:

Shaami: Even as faith in the Yevon clergy dwindles, the temple remains silent, choosing not to issue any official statement on the matter. Many are protesting the cold and insensitive manner in which the temple has treated the people. There have even been reports of a mass exodus from Bevelle by dejected temple followers… Wh-What do you think you’re doing!? Can’t you see I’m working here? You sure are a show-off, aren’t you! ¬We have unconfirmed reports that Maester Seymour has committed an unspeakable crime… Will you move!?
